New Porsche GT3 Cup Racer Breaks Cover

Porsche shows off its latest racer - and this time it's based on the GT3 RS

Coming to a one-make race near you...
Coming to a one-make race near you...
This is Porsche's latest 911 GT3 Cup racer, set to be unveiled in the flesh at the Frankfurt motor show alongside the new 911 GT3 RS.

The new GT3 Cup is also the first to be based on the wide-bodied GT3 RS chassis, meaning that the latest racer grows by 44mm at the rear, and that the car gets the wider front arches of the new GT3 RS.

The GT3 RS base also means that engine capacity grows to 3.8 litres, while the power for the Cup car also grows 30bhp to 450bhp at 8500rpm (the same as in the GT3 RS road car).

Er, can we have a larger rear wing please?
Er, can we have a larger rear wing please?
Unlike the road car, however, the GT3 Cup has a six-speed sequential manual gearbox instead of an H-pattern shift, while the enormous rear wing (which measures 1.7 metres across, making it 240mm wider than the old racer's wing) comes direct from FIA GT3-spec 911 racers.

Supercup versions of the GT3 Cup, which race as part of the F1 support package, also get Porsche's PCCB carbon-ceramic brakes and a modified exhaust system that, according to Porsche, offers an "even more dynamic and muscular sound".

If you want to go racing, the base price for the Porsche before you add local taxes is 149,850 euros (£131,680).

The rear wing soon to be seen on the back of a Corsa near you.

The wing reminds me of the 935 silhouette cars.

It is probably a 911 that has lesser engine but goes faster round a track smile

2 Points (here we go lol)

Number 1--- I drive a corsa and i'm pretty sure i'm speaking for every other corsa owner in the country when I say I couldnt afford the spoiler off a gt3 rs cup.

Number 2--- How funny would it be to actually put that wing on a corsa- can u imagine turning up to a Porsche owners club meet in it?? biggrin People would literally attack u!

Anywho love the car- silver detail and alloys reminds me of this very rare car-

You do realise this is a 'race' car.. its not part of the normal Porche road car range

(Obviously the car its based on is, if thats what you mean the GT3 RS has been around for some time....?)

The GT3 RS that this car is based on came out last week, so not the longest amount of time..

But you are right, there hasbeen 996 and 997 mk.1 GT3 RS variants before

No, I think you'll find the GT3 Cup has been around a while.

Can this particular car be driven on the roads or is it just a race car? It would be good to get one for track days without the need for a trailer.

This is just a race car. They can be made road legal, but the GT3 RS isn't that far off it if you want something to drive to the track.

Actually the road car is very far off it - a Cup car is a whole level up (significantly lighter, sequential box, stiffer suspension, slicks).

But if you're going to go to all the effort of making one road legal, apart from the sequential box in the cup car and more enjoyable interior in the GT RS there wouldn't be much difference in performance. There's no way you want to drive a car with cup suspension on the road, you'd be in bits by the time you got to the tack.

[Edit] - Still, I want one too!

it's quite simple; carrera designates an engine development car and the remnants of porsche's ill fated program to build seals, shafts, barings and liners from a brie/parmesan alloy. a 4 in the name means it is a variant designed for learner drivers and farmers. you can pay an extra £7 a month, 16% apr to get an s badge on the back. the turbo is a high torque version used to accelerate fat businessmen onto motorways safely. all these cars are available for the disabled with tiptronic. proper 911's have a gt name. the gt3 caters for those having a mid life crisis and has a turbo engine, without a turbo. the gt3 rs is a chaved up gt3 for those who got divorced after buying a gt3, it provides an extra 5kg of downforce at 205mph. finally the gt2 is a turbo with the front driveshaft unbolted for an extra 20k. quite simple... something for everyone wink

That new cup car is really a baby RSR by the looks of things
