T5 Gearbox

Please could anyone provide me with a definate answer to the question of fluid capacity of a T5 gearbox. 1995 Chimaera.

acording to the Steve Heath bible the Borg-Warner T5 gearbox requires 2.5 pints of mobil AFT 220 oil . Hope that helps you.

Just to muddy the waters, I believe that the nominal capacity is 2.55L but I've seen 1.4L quoted - this is almost exactly 2.5 pints, could it be that other people have got the units muddled too?

2.55 litres of ATF

Changed the gearbox oil on my '99 Chim a few weeks ago. After a complete drain the refill took exactly 2,3 litres.

Yes, quoted figures are low from what I remember.

Volume specified at about 1.4 litres but actually takes a little over 2 litres. Therefore I would get 5-No 500ml cans. Assuming you can transfer (nearly) all the oil into the box.

I was recommended and used ATF.

Thank you for all the replies. Unfortunately no one seems able to answer my question.

I have a copy of the bible and am also aware that the box takes more than the specified amount. The question is; is the filler plug to be used as a level plug? The T5 box is used in many different applications and the angle of installation may be crucial to the volume of fluid required. 2.5 lites may be too much. Has anyone filled to 2.5 litres and suffered fluid leakage?

It is a little frustrating that no one appears to know the answer, or am I being too particular.

It's hardly surprising nobody answered that question since you haven't asked it until now!

There was debate on here only recently as to how you check the gearbox oil level and following various responses I seem to recall that someone found a reference that clearly stated that you fill until the oil flows out of the filler hole. If you search you may find the particular thread.

Try using Red Line Racing ATF (from Demon Tweeks etc.). Made the shift more consistent in mine, not so heavy when cold and not getting more difficult when really hot. Worked for me over regular ATF.
