Have just noticed that the photo on my licence has expired, looked on the DVLA website and they state that a reminder should have been sent with a form but I never received one. The photo expired about 3 months ago now and will need to go to the post office and get the appropriate form. They also want 20 quid to renew it but thats a moan for another post. Question here is am I still legal to drive.

Renewing a Photo Driving Licence
If your photo driving licence has expired, you can be fined up to £1000. It should be renewed every ten years, but if you fail to do so, it can result in your driving licence becoming invalid. You can choose to update your photo sooner than this if your appearance changes significantly. This can be done by filling in the DVLA's D1 application form, which you can get online, from the DVLA form ordering service or from certain Post Office branches. To check the status of your photo driving licence, the front of the card should show the expiry date of the photo. The DVLA will usually send a renewal application pack before the photo needs to be renewed. Renewing the photo is usually £17.50. Your new licence should be sent back to you within three weeks, although it may take longer than this if medical and personal details need to be verified. As long as you have previously held a UK driving licence and are not likely to have your renewal rejected for medical reasons, it should be fine for you to drive while you await your new licence.

The offence isn't driving without a licence (you still have a licence), it's an offence relating to the expired photocard.

Still an offence though, and people have been fined £1000 for it.

If you had a beard on your licence then shaved it off, would that mean a new photo?

You want to play roulette with a justice system that favors fining people for minor infringements as its key stone of law? I didn’t fancy it when renewing but let me know if you get away with playing ignorant wink

Bread has a sell-by-date and a best-before date. Perhaps it was a typo.

O/T - why does bottled water that has been "filtered for thousands of years through rock" or "locked in glaciers for Millennia" have a sell-by-date?

O/T - because the plastic used for the bottle deteriorates over time and taints the water.

On topic - I seriously hope that people aren't being fined £1000 for not renewing their photo on their licence in time.

Fair enough if appearance has changed significantly. If you can still be recognised from the pic, though, it's a harsh harsh penalty.

Especially considering those who still have the old licence and haven't moved house or changed entitlements don't have a photo at all.

Yes rules are rules but some of them are upheld too stringently and penalties applied seemingly with glee. The usual conclusion - hope common sense prevails - with the usual pessimism - it's not likely is it.

Rules are with us to severely punish the well intentioned general populace cos the feckless stick their fingers up at the system, and someone needs to feel its wrath or the system may as well not be there...
