Ok so this car started off a bit barry like this:

note the handle less doors, the m3 mirrors and the smoothed out side trim, colour coded arches and bumpers and the bad boy tints...

Anyway, my initial intentions where to just tidy it up and de barry it, however, i got a little carried away and before i knew it, it went into the garage for £1800 worth of engine work, on the already fitted 1.8 20v turbo engine, it came out looking like this:

Then i sold the horrid red and black half leather interior and ran with just a drivers seat for a while....
I then started the process of de barrying, which then spiraled out of control.

I whipped the arches off to reveal the butchering that was needed to fit the 17's, the previous owner flipped the bird at welding and went for good old expanding foam, mmmmmmmmm....

So i got even more pissed off and after the doors came off as they had to be replaced with ones with actual handles, i thought buggerit, i'm going to go all the way with this.

So i bought an electric recaro edition one interior, and a rare headed seat switch and all the wireing and pads.

I wipped out all of the black carpet and ordered new blue carpet to match (no pics as i've not fitted it)

Then i bought two sets of wheels, a set of BBS RS's and a set of BBS RM's

I then built them up (which are now for sale as i've seen how much this is going to cost me to finish!)

But i'm keeping the Rm's!!!

Then i stripped the car this weekend and its in the paint shop today:

the only bit of rust

the business end

the boss telling me i was doing it wrong!

Where it lives

the last time i ever see it in this colour, should be painted by the end of the week

To give you an idea of how this car will look when its finished, it'll be badged as a 16v as thats what it was before the conversion, the horrid dtm exhaust will be changed for a near as damn it origional looking one, basically it'll look standard bar the wheels.

Everything is either factory origional or rare optional extra apart from a few things like the gauges.

The new paint is BMW A30 Interlagos Blue.

Excellent! Nice to see someone returning a butchered Golf back to its original glory! Nice choice of colour too, will look great once painted and is sitting on those lovely looking BBS's smile

Will keep an eye on this to see what the after effects are once painted and it starts to take original shape again! Great job!

looking nice.

get those recaros off to MJ interiors. mmmmmmm

i did a mk3 20vt about 3 years ago, used an s3 225bhp engine on custom management with remap and other bits 280bhp. alot of fun. pretty pants in the wet though.

you will have lots of fun once you've done it. a mate did a mk2 20vt at the same time as me and he loves his to bits, still has it, I dont think he will ever part with it.

keep the pics coming

The edition ones are staying as they are, although i will replace the lower bolsters as they are slightly soft, need to get the trimmers to strip them for the heated pads anyway so will prob get them to do it at the same time.

It's good fun, i'm hoping that i can combat the traction issues with the right suspension/wheels/lsd combo.

Thanks for the comments chaps!

I do like that i have to admit, its great to see a 5-door done as well, it all adds to the sleeper look.

I dont think many people realise just how fast these mk2 20vt's are, brilliant engine for the car, i love mine!

I read about your problem with the lamps, i specified that the intercooler was fitted in away that allowed me to retain the inner spots as i much prefer the quad lamps, i can take some pics when it comes back if you like?

Thanks, i was pretty peeved when it came back from the garage with blue samco hoses as i wanted them in black, but i guess it worked out for the best in the end as its now going blue, but even so I did want the engine bay looking as standard as possible.

Next year when i have finished the interior, exterior and the chasis, i'll have the engine back out, clean it all up and paint it then exstend the wireing loom through the chasis legs to make everything neater. I'll also replace all the plastics and paint the bay along with stuff like the rusty Mc.

I really really want a modernised mk2 as a daily driver but don't have the balls to do it, plus some of the places I have to park I'd just be worried about it.

How common/easy is a 20vT conversion, or 1.9TDi for that matter and can you retro-fit aircon.....?

Fantastic project, I already know I'm going to be really jealous of the end result.

Its a fairly straight forward affair, if you use the Qpeng setup (mbe ecu and plug&play loom) along with their down pipe its all fairly easy. I'd say the best thing to do would be buy a salvage mk4 gti turbo and use all the bits you need from that.

I cant beleive i've gone as far as i have, but now i'm at this stage i thought i may as well go all the way and fully modernise it. As for air con, i really have no idea, i'm hoping to find out this winter using a mixture of mk2 factory air con and the 20vt system.

I hope it turns out like i imagine it!

Sadly not, it was mainly fixing a load of stuff that the previous owner had done to it, there's a massive list that i cba to type out but yeah, it was costly.

It runs 240bhp, but i'll be upping that later on and at some point i might go 4wd to take big bhp 400+ it already spins wheels in 4th in the damp as it is but i'm hoping i can sort this with tyres, suspension and obviously an lsd

Its now coming out of the paint shop this friday, Painter said it took a little longer preppeing than first thought and he wants to get it right obviously.

I've got another bill for £150+ for random screws, bolts, clips and other random little parts.

Got std green tint windows, just need a windscreen now.

There's so much left to do to this, but with Christmas not that far off and other things i need to pay for i may have to turn the heat down a littlefrown

Liking this a lot yes

Even though my 8v was kaput, I loved it like a Son.

I'd have another MKII in an instant.

Thanks chaps, the more i think about it the longer its going to take to finish, the plan was to de chav, then put back on the road, then i took the interior out then wanted a paint change, now i want the engine bay to look totally factory so the engine is going to come out, go back in for paint, loom extended through the chassis leg and lots of powdercoating, so yes its going to take alittle longer than i first thought!

The interior has been painted, the body has had yet more prep due to the st job the previous owner had done on it, its been alot of work and i cant thank Al who's painting this enough, he's doing a great job and i think it'll be a real credit to him once he's finished.

Sounds like your car is in very safe hands - once it's done you'll be glad you put in extra time and money every time you look at it. It's the details on these cars that make the difference.

Keen to see how you get on with the aircon also! I've only seen one MK2 with air retrofitted and that was an aftermarket system in a red 20VT that was doing the shows 2/3 years ago, badged 'GTD' if anyone else saw it?

Can't wait to see it once up and running smile

Amen. Although my 8v was the 5 dorr 4+E, carb model hehe

The MkII are great cars and this is exactly how they should be treated (i.e. play to their strengths rather than the council "taste rape" approach).

I kind of remember the car you are talking about but did't realise it had air con fitted!

I'm in no doubt everything will fit in as it should, its just the ac rad that i'm not sure where the hell it'll go as, well there is a massive intercooler there hehe

The guy painting this truely knows his stuff, he's been painting 30 odd years so i'm happy that he will do it justice.

Last few bits i'm buying are avo fully ajustable coilovers, pop out rear windows and some other bits and bobs, then thats it for 2months sadly, there will still be progress pics of little inexpensive bits though
