Land Speed Record Car 'Unwanted'

650mph 'Green Monster' fails to sell on eBay

One careful owner...
One careful owner...
A rebuilt version of the 'Green Monster' jet car, which broke the land speed record on three separate occasions, has come up for auction on eBay.

The original Green Monster was built by Art Arfons (1926-2007) in the early 1960s, using a 17,500 horsepower General Electric J-79 jet engine recovered from a scrapped B-58 Hustler bomber. Arfons crashed the car in 1966 causing considerable damage, but recycled many of the first car's parts in creating a new 'Green Monster'. Arfons chose not to compete in this after the heavy crash, and instead sold it to the wonderfully named 'Slick Gardner', a wealthy Californian who would, come 1978, drive the jet car to 650mph at the Bonneville salt flats, though this was not an official land speed record attempt.

The name 'Green Monster' apparently refers to the name laughingly given to the first of Arfons and his brother's high-speed projects by a track announcer. It was a three-wheeled dragster that was painted with green left-over tractor paint, but though the name persisted through subsequent iterations, the dominant green colour did not.

The auction has now ended with the reserve not met, with the highest bid at a paltry 53,600 USD.

Of course, for land speed junkies, 650mph is just not enough these days. Andy Green made it to 763mph in 1997 using Thrust SSC, but now plans for a 1000mph run in a car called the 'Bloodhound'.

Whilst the name of Richard Noble's latest LSR car is not quite as aptly-brutish as the 'Green Monster' (we know which would win in a fight), the 12.8m-long Bloodhound has gloriously comic-book styling, while the method of propulsion has come from a similarly child-like school of thinking. It appears to have gone something like this: "You know that Eurofighter Typhoon engine? That's pretty powerful, right? Okay, lets strap a rocket to it!".

The run is planned for 2011, but that date was set before the economy ate itself and the project relies on corporate sponsorship, so we'll have to keep our finger's crossed to see that run as soon as possible.

The Arfons/Breedlove battles of the 1960s were incredible. I'm surprised this hasn't sold; I just hope it finds its way into a museum or collection and doesn't disappear underground somewhere.

Well, they call it "Green" so it must be economical.

How much did they want for it, $53,000 seems like a good price for a car thats been in an accident and been thrashed to within an inch of it's life.

Is it possible to arrange a test drive? Only it's never wise to buy without trying first

I wonder what SVA would make of this, especially the pedestrian friendly front end.

Perhaps it should have a label stating "Never been raced or rallied" smile

Unless I have missed it, what is the background story? Why is it up for auction/sale? Is it some museum closing down or the family dont want it?

And anyone have a link to the ended auction?

This proves as much that eBay isn't a good venue for selling unique vehicles such as this. The guy who was trying to sell Obama's Chrysler (before He got that Hybrid Escape) ran into all kinds of trouble, including bogus bids, on eBay. He gave up after two tries, and will now try to sell it later at a conventional auction. One wonders, however, since Obama's popularity is plumeting like a bag of rocks, the car will be worth more or less after he's turned out after one term.

Pointless car? Get a grip - this car was part of one of greatest automotive battles ever. Ok it isn't a car in the convential sense of the word, and you wouldn't be able to drive it, but it still did 600mph+, not bad for something built with 1960s technology.

It might be no more than a museum piece now but its a unique part of land speed record history. If old Bugattis can go for millions of pounds, surely this thing, a 1 off, is worth at least a few hundred thousand of some weathly guys hard earned.

I know I'd buy it if I was in the wealthy bracket!

Art Arfons was a legend in Land Speed Records, buidling his own cars in what as effectively his backyard shed. I remember watching the BBC documentary on land speed records, the USAF asked him where the hell he got his engine from as it was still classified! Highly recommended viewing.

I hope this finds a good home too. Maybe worth a call to Jay Leno perhaps????

I had a poster of this on my bedroom wall when I was a kid - I'd forgotten all about it!!

It's brought back loads of memories now, it was the most amazing car I'd ever seen when I was 5 - I didn't even believe it actually existed. Wow. Just wow. If only I had a garage 40 feet long and my own personal salt flat...

Certainly a significant piece of history and heritage. I wonder what the Reserve figure was.

How dare you utter 'pointless' and 'car' in the same sentence on this site. Go and sit on the naughty step until you see the error of your ways.
