Has anyone got any "binnacle bodging" photos. I need inspiration on how to do mine. I'd rather not rally dash it.....

Don't have any photo's but I have seen the centre binnacle spaced back to clear, on first glance it looked quite normal

I never wanted to hack my firewall about, but this engine is a beauty and it would be a crime to fit SU's.

I've done it, kind of. I initially used a 6" Minispares one from a previous car but this didn't allow fitment of a filter (I'd only made the box as deep as I felt I could get away with whilst not having the binnacle stuck out). A 3" steel maniflow solved the problem though..

This is the MS manifold.. Best pic I've got I'm afraid but it had around 2" clearance with the steady bars fitted (and the shortest rampipes)

I've never liked running without filters so got this Maniflow...

and the interior..

Seems a nice compromise for me smile

Nice Job! That gives me a bit of faith. I'm looking at about a 2" max move back. I have a fair old filter with 60mm stacks. It's got a fair old cam on it and I'll lose power if I go shortening it too much.

I like my "place to stick stuff" dash. Rally dashes look busy and mines an old simple racer rather than a busy rally car.

I'll whack some photos up in due course...

Thanks. smile

no matter what you do, you will need to cut some of the bulkhead away to allow the lh trumpet of the weber to clear the body work (unless you use splits or a swan necked manifold). with a small amount of trimming and open trumpets (dont use the sock filters, they are a waste of time)you will be able to either space the std plastic cowl away, or make a small 'bump' in the lh side to allow clearance.

the neatest way ive seen it done, is for the factory hole to be cut out and moved an 1" or so to the left (so its central with the engine, rather than the shell). this allows fitment with the apperance of no cutting and looks pretty neat (again, with no filters)

if your wanting to run filters (a proper one) then you will have to fit a box, a weber with a filter needs to have a certain 'free space' between the end of the trumpet and the back of the filter (one of the reasons socks are a waste of time) and the filter needs to have a good supply of air.

just jamming an old weber, a scabby filter into a bashed out hole is more than likely to reduce power over s.u's, they are very fussy beasts and need fitting and setting correctly to get the best.

I like webbers and in prefrance to SUs. But by the time you have done what you will have to do to fit a webber with out puting a hole in you bulk head, you will have lost all the power you would have gaind from a webber. I would go for a well set up set of SUs if it was me.

I'm going to have the binnacle out and then muck about with it accordingly. It has an 85mm filter with 60mm trumpets. I appreciate that I will have to chop it about a bit. We shall see. It's a challenge.

It has a long cam and is optimised as much as possible. I could fit a shorter manifold, but that would be toning it down. If done carefully, it should be doable. I need it to breathe properly and running no filters is asking for stand off shenanigins.

My binnacle is probably a good 60 or 70mm out from the original, although it's probably not that noticeable from the angle of the pic.

The manifold probably gives enough clearance to squeeze in a 80mm filter, but I wanted a load of sound deadening material in the back of the box (getting old!) hence the 50mm filter in mine. Not had it dyno'd since changing the manifold but there's no discernable loss in oomph, and still enough to run a 14.6 sec quarter mile wink
