hi all another newbie question here, other then personal choice / taste of rear spoiler what are the pros and cons of the rear wing / spoiler on a GTR im gonna sprint the car and alot ( not all ) of the circuits are short and twisty ( top speed of about a ton ) so 1st question do we know at what speed ish the wing starts to produce down force ? and 2nd question does having the wing on slow down top speed ( or does that depend on what power the engine has ) cheers for any advice and thoughts on this , cheers , Dal

Dal,

i was told by the factory that the GTR does not really need a rear wing unless you intend to go over 150mph as it help with stability under braking.

it must benefit rear grip because of the downforce but after several track days without one, i never suffered from oversteer, in fact the car was very well balanced.

the wing will cause drag which will affect the accelleration and top speed to some extent- obviously this effect is not so noticeable the more hp you have.

for sprints i would have thought a wing is not necessary (IMO) better off spending the money on a set of Kumo's or 888 tyres.

Hope this helps,
Martin.

Hi

Why do you want to do sprints in a Ult?? It will certainly be fun, i would of thought the rear wing would be more of a handicap than a help especially if you want to get the back out to get round the tight bends??

A LSD and good ratios would make a lot of sense as well, i think too much power would be a disadvantage for your plans

Hi thanks for both bits of advice , the reason for wanting to do sprints in the ultima "is because i can" , i didnt mean that in a sacastic way , its iv been sprinting for the last 3 years in my zetec powered frog ( the blowing my own trumpet bit ,i won my clubs sprint championship this year ) as well as track days , so when i buy an ultima it will be nice to use it in compition as well as spirited road driving ( which is getting harder to do now ) also the frogs been in sports libra class so a change of class would be nice too , it will probably fall into low production over 2.0 litre class , does anyone else on this forum use their ultima for compition use racing , sprinting ,hillclibming etc ?

Hi Dal,

I used to sprint a turbo charged Davrian which had similar power to weight to an Ultima. I spent a lot of time on the aerodynamics and the rear wing and it made a big difference to top speed and cornering. If I was going to sprint an ultima, I would put a big single element wing with a gurney flap on it, dive planes and a front splitter. Wilder on here has some excellent dive planes for sale. I would also consider a faster steering rack and an LSD gearbox if you are really serious!

Would be great to see an Ult thundering up the hills! Let us know how you get on!

Hi Martin,

How did having a rear wing improve your top speed, surely the fact that it is generating downforce must cause drag and reduce top speed?

Wonder if a good rear extruder without the wing could also give better stability at high speeds and under braking scratchchin

The rear wing reduced my top speed from 120 to 114 mph at MIRA handling circuit, but I was nearly a second faster overall because of the higher cornering speeds... It's all a bit of a balance of drag vs speed, but on the hills, generally it's all about grip and power. At MIRA I did a 52 second lap which i think is still the class record! smile not bad for a 1 litre imp engine!

I would think an Ultima would only be quick on the hills if it has a lot of downforce, as with hillclimbing it's all about getting the power on the track. Just look at the Pilbeams or the mental 720bhp MIRA Audi quattro to see what aerodynamics can achieve!

Good luck!

just read the wiki of the Bugatti, they have to lower the car and reduce the wing angle to achieve the 400kmh sacrifying stability.
As I love the side view of the canam as it is I have no intentions to put a wing
