Alfa V6 mid engined, some questions
Discussion
Hi there folks, can i pick your collective brains please?
I understand there is a dino replica which uses the Alfa V6 mid engined, or at least there was one a few years ago. Does anybody know which gearbox this used for the MR Transverse layout?
Or in fact know which gearbox could be used for this?
On a limb, does anyone have dimensions of the Alfa 3.0 unit found in the later cars, circa 200PS.
Any inherent problems with these engines i should know about/be wary of?
Thanks in advance,
Olie

It's a popular fitment in Stratos replicas. It uses the transverse FWD V6 and gearbox from any of the modern Alfas (164 on). Very strong engines. Change the cambelt and waterpump while it's out though.
And the sparkplugs nearest the bulkhead if its anything like the monte with one of these shoehorned in!Thank you for the information.
The only issue i can see with using the FWD box is the selector shaft will be on the rear of the box. Do you know how this is overcome in the MR layout?
Extra long gear selector cables that double round on themselves?
or is the box modified so the shaft comes out the front?
Or is it a custom bracket bolted to the top of the gearbox?
The selector mechanism on the car that this will be transplanted into has the selector forks almost on top of the gearbox but it's the same box used in a FWD setup so i think i may be able to connect these gear cables to the Alfa box and it work correctly if it is the last option above of a bracket on top of the gearbox.
As for access to the spark plugs, we have previously cut an access panel in the upper shelf firewall as it also gave access to the oil filler cap, so i may re-employ that with the alfa engine, dependant on which bank the oil filler is located on.

I don't I'm afraid. Try asking in the kit car forum on here.OlberJ said:

You might be able to swap the cam covers round if you need to!You want the most modern engine you can get hold of, a recent 24v unit. The 166 and GTV 3.0 seem popular donors. Parts like cam belt tensioners are getting hard to get hold of for the earlier engines (like the 164 3.0 12v one in my kit) and they are far easier to tune.
Recent engines have 6 speed gearboxes with cable selector, which has been done in Stratos replicas. Check out stratossupersite.com for nitty gritty details. My kit with the old 12v V6 has a big long wobbly rod arrangement to change gears, and I am always taking spanners to it so I can find reverse again

IIRC jimmystratos on here has a kit stratos which i think uses a alfa v6 might be worth asking plus he's from the borders.

I use both ghearchange types on my Lancia rally 037 replicas
164 12&24v were both shaft change ,the shaft in the top of the gear box can be simply replaced from other side a lancia montecarlo stick and linkage can then be easily converted to use
If you use the later cable change you have to invert the gearbox mechanism and then also the gearstick mechanism , i have detailed photos available of cable change at jlambert10@hotmail.co.uk
