Hi all,
I'm currently dismantling my 944 2.5 8v to investigate oil pressure problems, and have found that the cambelt / balancer belt layout is a bit odd.
Specifically the balancer belt fouls the water pump slightly (pictures 1 and 2 - witness mark visible in second photo). And the belt idlers / guides that don't actually touch the belts are something I've not seen before (photo 3).

Can anyone comment on whether this is right? Any help would be appreciated!

I only acquired the car recently, with new water pump and belts having been fitted by a previous unknown mechanic.

I don't know much about the balance belt as I haven't looked into mine but what you have labelled as the lower balance shaft is actually the tensioner and it looks as if it may have been tensioned the wrong way around which could be why it is missing the roller and clipping the water pump. This could also be why mine whines like crazy.

I'd wait for somebody else to confirm that though but it could be worth giving this a read http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/eng-10.ht...

Oops yes you're right - I've just put the label in the wrong place on the photo. Well spotted!

Hi just looking at your pictures, yes the tensioner has been turned the wrong way, balance shaft adjuster clockwise to tighten, cam belt anticlockwise. The roller in the middle of the balance belt should be loosened of when adjusting the belt, then roller adjusted with 1mm preload onto balance belt with 1mm clearance on the lower balance shaft drive gear.

Just to expand Chris's point, looks to me from the photos that the cam belt tensioner is also wrong. Also, looks quite oily - are the seals leaking ? Oil on the belts can weaken them.

Hi folks, thanks for the quick and detailed response.
I see the point on the balancer belt tensioner having been turned the wrong way - if it had been turned the other way then the top run of the balancer belt would be lower down and would clear the water pump. That would make sense.

The link to the US online manuals is excellent - a big help too.

Unfortunately I don't know why the water pump and belts were changed previously, but I suspect that the root cause also led to the current problems with intermittent oil pressure. The oil filter's obviously not been changed recently though, so I'm seriously doubting the quality of the work done previously.

I've dropped the big end caps off and found the bearings to be fairly ill, so will rebuild the engine with new bearings and oil pump and a good clean. I'll also dismantle the oil cooler and oil pressure relief valve to see if anything else looks obviously wrong. Ho-hum...
