Looking to buy a second hand F430 55 plate! noticed a few of these early cars have alot of bubbling around rear arches like rust bubbling! Is this normal with early cars or is this a warranty issue which I'm sure should be covered! First thoughts were poor respray.. any thoughts guys?

I would have thought that due to the 430 being aluminium that would be no rust. No idea what this could be if it's showing on more than one car.

You noticed this on a few cars? How many have you seen?

Out of about six cars I would say half had this type of bubbling! I too thought aluminium was rust proof but obviously poor repairs can lead to this sympton! Will obviously avoid these cars....

all metals can corrode! Aluminum can corrode especially if it is with a steel frame! Ask any old Range Rover owner!

The rear arches on my friends F430 spider were really bad with this bubbling after 2 years and about 6k miles.

Ask any old Range Rover owner! aluminium doesnt do a "bubbling" effect such as steel does , ali oxidises and leaves a sord of white dust around the surface. Never myself have i seen ali bubble from under paintwork!

A very common issue - it is usually caused by a chip in the paint being left unattended & moisture creeping through. When aluminium oxidises it does indeed cause the paint to bubble - usually in a 'softer' way than steel, but bubble it does! Whether it puts you off a car is entirely a matter for you & whether you have a good quality local repairer you trust to sort it out. ATB, Al.

Nothing new about it, the alloy bits of Ferraris have been bubling away for years, be interesting to see how good the corrosion protection on the newer all alloy cars actually is over a long period. Example attached (86 Mondial 3.2 with alloy bonnet)

It does I'm afraid, Exfoliation corrosion, ask any aircraft engineer, as has been said even worse if you get metal to metal contact with something ferrous, then you get an electrolytic action too. For examples look really close around the front wing indicator repeater of almost any 360, mine did it within the year from new!

Had several scabs of bubbling paint repaired on my 355 a few months ago, really spoil the look of the car. No rust or corrosion underneath, a strange Ferrari quirk it seems!

it's common i'm told. My 550 had some so off it went to the body shop and now it lives in a car o port thing. Problem solved

I remember being very disapointed when looking for 355's ref bubbles and rust etc was even more shocked when I looked at a few 360's all seemingly original paintwork but serious reaction in places with paint actually flaking off in places. Put me right off! Recently gone back to the old 328 - OK in places it might feel a bit old fashioned but I have always maintained they are tough old bruisers and are screwed together rather well in comparison with the newer stuff, hell they even give a nice 'German' thunk when you close the door! Paintwork well I won't go there apart from saying the 328 is painted properly using gold old 'nasty' stuff with layer after layer subseqently giving a sheen and lust sadly missing on the late one's. Checkout the 430's finish - makes a new BMW look well painted. Ok that was an exageration!

It seems Ferrari not covering paint issues after the 3 year warranty expires.. and even before then ferrari claims some of the bubbling is down to stone chips not being treated... poor excuse really... I have to say the only thing that lets the brand down is the bodywork...

my 360cs has bubbled a little on the rear quater. not happy about it and certainly not caused by any stone chipping. either a contaminant under the paint or as you say corrosion. do ferrari's come with a 10 year anti corrosion warranty like many other cars or is that a very daft question?
