Heard a rumour that the next 911 will have the engine moved to midships ala Boxster. We lose the back seats but gain a rear boot. Anyone else heard same?

The mules look bigger and wider, but I have been told that the rear seat stays and it remains rear engined. it is certainly a major redesign by all accounts, so I too am interested in what people are hearing.

Wouldn't that just be a slightly bigger Cayman?

I can't see that happening as even if you forget the traditions of engine tech and location the 911 is the 2+2 GT in the Porsche range and would then need to be replaced to maintain sales volumes.

It would be a big mistake loseing the rear seats in a 911. I think the Evora has the engine in the middle with a boot and rear seats so it can be done.

Yes but if I remember correctly the Evora seats are seats for name sake only and are pretty much useless. As someone with kids, I actually use mine and thats why I didnt opt for a 360, AM V8, etc etc etc. In fact Im considering a change next year and im really struggling to find a suitable successor. DB9 seems the only option. If Porsche remove the back seats, thats me and probably thousands of others gone elsewhere.

Yes, i am agreeing with you. The rear seats are essential in my opinion. The Evoras are like benches(similar to previous Mercedes SL)but the Porsche is a bigger car and the 998 may be bigger still.

Very much doubt they'd drop the rear engined layout altogether, but I wouldn't be surprised if they'd developed a gearbox or packaging layout that lets them bring it significantly further forward.

The 911 can't and won't lose it's back seats - it's a 2+2 and always will be. Porsche know their market and their customers - it's the sole reason the car looks the way it does, still has a 6-boxer and the engine is slung over the rear axle. smile

Boxster/Cayman will probably arrive before.
