Hello, this is my first post, so be gentle!

Thinking of getting a newish (2008) 987 S, low mileage (<10k), manual, and with a few toys (sat nav etc). I reckon I should be able to get a nice one this side of £35k.

The other option would be 996 cabrio. Obviously it would be older and have a few more miles on the clock, but I have seen a 2004 one with 24k on the clock for the same money as the boxster.

What would you go for and why?

Cheers.

hi, if your comfortable affording £35k on a porsche get yourself in an early 997S instead off a very late 996. boxters are great but a 911 are well .................better. my opinion of course.

Hard to do at the moment for £35k - certainly an S which is manual and not been to the moon.

What floats your boat? A nearly new car that will cost you a bundle, or an older car that will go faster and depreciate slower? Only one of them will get "not a proper Porsche" comments (not my opinion, but it's what people will think).

£35k would put me in a 996TT (in fact it just has). You could have a 996 cab for half that if you wanted.

Or a bit older Boxster S for £25k and pocket the change?

An early 2008 987 S won't be DFI so I don't think in terms of technology/aesthetics you're getting much other than a newer car.

Can't see why anyone would spend £35k on a 996 personally but that's just my opinion.

I'm sure they're good value vs. a 997 GT3 if you want a GT3, personally I still think all the the 9x6 range looks dated vs. the 9x7 range so I don't see the logic in buying the already old/outdated model especially if it's for road use where 911 vs. Boxster S isn't really relevant IMO.

Thought the Boxster handles better too if you're a capable enough driver to tell?

go for the boxster S if you push up your spending up to near £39k should get yourself a new one over the winter period complete with 2 year warranty.why worry about a warranty? ims failure is your answer(intermediate shaft bearing failure) new engine circa £7k.avoid 996 and early 997 engines as more prone to failure. gen2 cars from late 2008 do not have ims.boxster is a great car you will not be disapointed.boxster was also designed as a convertible could never see the point of 911 cab.yes gt3/turbo are the exception but you will not get a good one for your money plus you need to allow for consumables.

rubbish, avoid 996 and 997 engines as more prone to failure what a load of s@#t.

Fair points, and side by side they do look worlds apart. I'd agree that a straight comparison between a 996 and a 986 with similar power would be interesting. Anyone want to lend me a 996?

Sorry but nearly no all the failures i have read about have been mainly the 996 engine and early 997s the bearing was upgraded on 2006 models onwards.just because your car is immaculate does not mean your bearing could not let go without warning(mine went on my nearly new3.5 years old 986s 12900miles properly looked after etc.why do you think porsche junked the ims?

To be clear. The op wants a cab 911 if he goes that route, and at 35k it inst happening for a 997 unless you want leggy/auto/catd/crap spec. Search PH - bugger all at that price worth looking at. Might have got one in Jan, and no doubt will in the future. But not at the moment.
