VW Passat TDi leaking EGR valve (supposedly)
Discussion
I just had my Passat TDi130 daily hack serviced at a main VW dealership and was informed my EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculating) valve is leaking badly and requires replacing ASAP, as does my NSF lower turbo pipe. It's bad enough that these (what I think) rather simple items command the grand sum of £286.24, but only 3000 miles ago when I had my CV joint replaced at another VW main dealership there was no mention of the offending items on their check sheet.
I realise that within 3000 miles they both could've suddenly deteriorated but I just feel slightly suspicious about it for some reason. I've had a look myself but due to time contraints and the clattery PD diesel covered by a mountain of plastic I cannot say myself either way.
Would any of you rather more experienced people be able to tell me what effect (if any) a leaking EGR would have on the engine, and if I'd be able to spot a change in performance, economy etc etc? As for the turbo pipe I asked what exactly was wrong with it and noone seemed to be able to say for definite. I'm new to diesels so any info would be much appreciated.

I think my egr valve is going as well. R reg TDi A4.
Slight loss of power, more than normal smoke under load and lower mpg.
Am running some funky chemical engine cleaner through the tank in the diesel and some mixed in with the oil. Have to do an oil change very shortly after.
This should help clean the egr valve. Cheaper than replacing it.

I had an egr valve fail on a saab 93 tid 150 I had, it felt like the turbo had gone, no go at all at low revs, pulling out of junctions etc was awkward to say the least!
Colleague at work had these exact symptoms on his diesel Volvo, cured by fitting a new EGR valve for about 400 quid from a main dealer. You can take the egr valve off and clean it out, its normally the carbon build up inside it that stops the valve from operating. I have before taken them off and soaked in brake/carb cleaner and worked the valve free again and its as good as new.
Also if the egr was leaking then i would have thought that you would have loss of power and, the engine managment light would come on as the egr valve is on the obd system and surely you would only replace a pipe that was split or broken, and if yours was, then you would have loss of power, a hissing noise(loudly) and a light on because the boost pressure is incorrect,
Im only young (23) so may be wrong but have had training from bosch diagnostics to help support this theory, if any knows better im always willing to learn hehe!

There's certainly no engine management warnings on the dash and performance seems normal to be honest, and before shelling out the money, I wanted to make sure these items needed replacing.
I was just speaking to a neighbour who was saying he had his EGR blanked off completely, supposedly there's a mod available online for Ford TDCI diesels. Surely this EGR valve must serve some purpose? Is it mainly for environmental/emission reasons?

I thought the leky EGR on these VW cars was a membrane that tears in repeated use and that you can just carry on driving the car without damage but with a loss of power that gets worse as the tear gets worse.
If it was my passat I'd just drive it until the symptoms became noticeable and then swap it for an aftermarket item from someone like forge.

It's there to reduce NOx emissions. You can remove them on some cars, but bear in mind on newer ones it's more likely to be integral to the car's fuelling strategy, so removing it could cause problems. Chances are if there's a kit for it, then there isn't a problem with removing it.
FYI
EGRs send a percentage of exhaust gas back into the inlet side of the engine. As a result they do tend to get gummed up quite nicely and stop working. Rare for them to be leaking.
As for the Turbo pipe. EVERY VAG TD car from teh last 4-6 years has leaking boost pipe seals. You can renew them of course, but then 10-20K from now they will be leaking oil again. Its worth pointing out that the issue is that there shouldn't be any oil in the inlet air stream. But that would mean VAG asked Garret (et al) to build turbos that didn't leak so badly. And then fail....

They can stop sealing properly once they get too gummed up and the inlet pipe can also become restricted, limiting the air that can enter the engine.EGRs send a percentage of exhaust gas back into the inlet side of the engine.
