I've had a number of nice cars - 996 - Maserati 4200 - DB7 etc but am looking to take the plunge and get a dream car in the New Year if the prices are right. Budget is £40 - £50k and I know it'll be pushing it for the Gallardo but am in no rush.

I figure £5k a year servicing for all three with a warranty maybe to cover worst case scenarios like gearboxes. Any experiences of the three cars?

Would be looking for a manual gearbox as a preference.

If your looking for something special then I would say the Gallardo.. will turn more heads than the Aston and 550 and you'll probably find the build quality better too... not to mention quicker than both too if that makes any differance to your choice..

Ferrari - most reliable
Aston - least reliable
Lambo - can't drive it slowly

Lambo then smile

Are Astons really that unreliable? If so, its a real shame!

Vanquish I think.

Look great, very classy, go like hell, fantastic road presence and exclusive (Not many Vanquish's around but alot of V8s and DB9s). Sounds the best out of the 3 as well. Really has a great soundtrack.

I'd find it difficult choosing between the gallardo and the vanquish but think the gallardo would win providing I could find a decent one in spec! IIRC, the vanquish is only made in auto/semi-auto so you won't be finding a manual one of those if that matters?

Wasn't sure if the Vanquish came in manual spec.

The Ferrari is definitely the 'sensible' choice - the Gallardo will really be stretching the budget but if you're only going to do this once...

At that price you'd probably be looking at an older one though, which if I remember correctly, had a diabolical gearbox. (Awaits to be corrected on this...)

According to Top Gear yes, for around £15,000 Aston will fit a full manual gearbox to any Vanquish. If I had £60,000 to spend on a car, apart from a 355 a £45,000 early Vanquish with the new gearbox would be tempting.

I'm afraid the Vanquish seems to be.

When I was in the P1 club they had all 3 cars. Vanquish was a pain mainly with the auto box which kept on playing up. Ferrari was very reliable, and Gallardo problems seemed to be with the e-gear. I assume the manual is better.

If it were my choice and money, and assuming the car would be a merely a fun car rather than regular user, then I would go for the Lambo. If used more then it would be the Ferrari.

Now, if you are talking about the Vanquish S then that is a different deal altogether!

Worth noting that all cars are no longer new. So the key is how well they've been looked after by their respective owners - and what you prefer, of course!

550 - I've had three (still own a 550 WSR) - they just work - and are pretty quick even 13 years after launch. It's a big car - and as long as it's not Rosso Corsa or Giallo Fly - are pretty understated. Do get a tubi end box, though! Very reliable. Interior is aging nicely, and is a special place to be.

Gallardo - much more modern, they're built well and are quick cars. Will attract more attention that the 550 - but again, will need to have been loved and cherished by it's previous owners. Pretty reliable. Well made interior - although, IMO, beginning to date now.

Vanquish - Lovely - bar the gearbox! As stated before, reliability is not the greatest - last of the hand built Astons, I guess. Personally, I am unconvinced by the main console, which was rectified on the later S and Final Edition variants. If you are very lucky, you may be able to find one which has been converted by AM Works (£35K retro option). It transformed the car - they should have launched it as manual. I loved my friends (S, with the manual gearbox). Not convinced the interior stands up well to much usage, though.

Just my two pennith...

AM Works Service is hideously expensive to do anything - and they're not always the best option either.

A WSR - wasn't that Damon Hill's favourite car ever?

I'm leaning towards the 550 as it seems to be the more sensible choice and will get used weekly. Just need to find a Grigio or Nero original example!

I was considering a 575 but as you say most have the F1 pack which I don't want.

How would you possibly rate the Gallardo as more special than a 550 or Vanquish?! It's more mass-produced and more diluted than either.

But not as much as if you were driving a Countach, Diablo or Murcielago. Minus five thousand points.
