Hi all
First time posting in here. I am looking to buy an X5 3.0D with around 100k on clock in the new year on a 52/53 plate. Need to know from anyone who has one or had one how are they to live with.
Any known problems apart from usual wear and tear.
Do turbos give any problems.
What fuel economy is like.
Any help and advice will be greatly appreciated.

Probably get better responses on X5 drivers.
Economy wise - depending on mix of driving etc anything from low 20s to 32mpg.
Haven't heard of turbo's giving major problems but a few issues with injectors at higher mileages.
Auto gearbox was "sealed for life" but "life" has turned out to be 100,000 miles. If I were you I would do some research on this issue and factor in the cost of a auto box oil change when buying.
On another thread, someone has mentioned that their local BMW dealer offers an inspection service - might be worth doing once you have found a car you like.

My 2001 X5 gets around 25mpg in normal use, this is 50/50 town and A roads. On a long run I get about 30mpg.
They're big heavy cars and people like me drive them faster than most 4x4s so they tend to need brakes and suspension bushes. Make sure there are no slight knocking sounds when you go over bumps, I replaced a lot of the bushes in the front to cure knocking and after a 4 wheel allignment the bill was fairly big.
Turbos have been known to fail around the 100000 mile mark, make sure there are no whining or whooshing noises. This dosn't seem to be paticularly common though.
Mine had the injectors cleaned when I got it to cure a slightly rough idle, if it needs injectors they're £100 each.
The gearbox in the pre 2003/4 facelift cars is made by GM and is a known weak point, £2500 for a re-conditioned unit. Later cars have a ZF box which is (apparently) much better but facelift cars are quite a bit more expensive.
Other sources of noises can be the boot lid, the top section has adjustable bump stops that need adjusting quite often or the boot rattles. Newer ones appear to have cured this.
I'm replacing mine soon, the gearbox sometimes holds gears which is a bad sign and I don't intend to replace it. Having looked at lots of other cars I'll be buying another X5.

I have a 03 3.0d. I have ran it for two and half years, 25,000 miles. Its now at 85,000. Until recently, when I had to replace the turbo (£1300) ouch! it has only needed an oil change, two cv boots (mot failure). Apart from the tyres & brakes pads etc. X5drivers site is a wealth of info. I think the bushes are prone to fail and the rears are about £400 from an indy. The gearbox is weak after 100,000 so as a preventive measure I have replaced the oil. I probably would only replace the X5 with another as well, great car. Im now looking for a warranty but when I have been reading small print on a few not sure whether its gettting one. Warranty companies dont seem to like high milers!
I have a petrol X5 on an 02 plate. Love it to bits. Before you part with your money though, check all the speakers work if not about an £800 dealer fix or £400 on eBay.
Check the steering adjuster does all it should, up, down, back and forwards and up when you take the key out. Big bill if it doesnt.
Make sure all the windows work well. If its double glazed (really peaceful not just for the heating bills) the windows motors work hard.
Most warrantees dont cover the above.
X5drivers is the place to look.
