Anyone any comments on the TVR Power 885 cam?
You see a lot on the other cam's but can never recall seeing anything on this one?
It's the one they put in the Taraka I think but anyone just had the cam fitted without the full job... and what's the end results?.....

Cheers

I have it fitted - but never had anything else, so have nothing to compare it with.

Car still drives...

Not particularly helpful, really.

Sorry.

Hi Dom... didn't I see a post recently where you were having shunting problems?.. Did you resolve this??

Still shunts. Did before rebuild, does now...

Getting it remapped/tuned up by Mark Adams, so hopefully this should improve matters...

Hi Dom... Hope Mark sorts it out for you.... Is the shunting about the same as it was before??
Did you just have the cam done or other bit's??

So... does anyone know where to buy a 435 cam at all?....
Do they still exist????????

The engine had an 885 cam in there before the rebuild - and it shunted then. It has had an 885 cam in it since I bought it - and has shunted since I bought it wink

Although not to say that the 2 are related... Think mine needs a remap to sort out all the aftermarket parts - then we'll see...

To the O/P:

When I spoke to Dom at TVR Power, IIRC he said that the power band was designed to be from around 2000 to 6250rpm. It is designed to be a little more "top-end", but not to the extent to losing low-down manners... if I understood what he said (apologies if not, Dom!).

It is also designed to work with their supercharger, so would not need alteration if you decided to go down the forced-induction route.

Hope this helps,

Dom

I have also just had one of these fitted in my car by Track v Road on the advice of Power, as a replacement for the standard cam as it had worn badly. Looking forward to driving it but at the moment my car is stuck at TvR as we have 12 inches of snow where I live at Rossendale and I can't get the daily snotter out let alone get the Tiv back home and into the garage. Roll on the big melt! Will let you know how it runs when I get it back.

I have only had the chance to drive the car once on the way back from the garage. It has been laid up since then due to the weather and me being laid up sick since Christmas.

However, on the one drive I did have I was very pleased. The car pulled smoothly from just 1500 revs all the way up in any gear. All signs of shunting from the old worn cam where gone. It was noticeably quicker than before and definately pulled better. So overall very pleased indeed, the car now feels like it did when I bought it. I wasn't sure if I had just got used to it or if it wasn't as quick as it was when I first bought it nearly four years ago with 20K on the clock. Well I now have my answer, the old cam was badly worne and the car was definately down on power.

Whilst very pleased, in the interest of complete honesty, I can't isolate how much of the improvement is simply having a new cam on a 45K mile engine, and how much is this cam over a standard one. Either way nothing negative to note and very pleased with the result. Look forward to a decent drive when the weather picks up (and I pick up).

I have a 4.3 Chimaera (1994 pre-serpentine).
I think I have some cam wear so am going to change the cam.

Any thoughts on the 885 cam in general for this engine and how it compares to the Kent 218 as that is what I've been recommended?

Thanks

The Kent 218 is a milder cam than the 214 that's normally in there ex-Blackpool, so you'd lose top end compared to the standard item. A gut feeling says the 885 would be a good match for the revvy (relatively speaking) nature of the 4.3 and still be quite civilised in traffic.

I've got a Richard Beaty special in my engine that's rather nice but then it was specified to match his heads and pistons...

This makes sense as I also understand that a Kent 214 was the standard factory fit in these 4.3 engines.

I can find little info on the 885 cam from TVR power other than it's an evolution of the 435 originally fitted to the 5.0 cars. Anyone know any more on profile/characteristics etc?
Now I hear lots of good news about the Stealth...but it's significantly more expensive. So I'm erring towards fitting an 885.

Do you by the way know if a 94 Chim (well actually I think it was made in '93 just registered in '94)
4.3 engine has pocketed pistons and double valve springs or not?

Excellent write up but sadly doesn't cover the 885 cam...I'm trying to justify spending the extra money on a 218 or a Stealth over the 885 which could well be a good cam for the 4.3?
