My front contis have 'had it' and I was considering replacing them with the Pirelli Rosso N4s, since so much has been said/written about them recently.

However, I only replaced the rears about 1500miles ago and don't particularly fancy changing all them as well for the sake of matching.

So, are there any risks to mixing? I will not be mixing on each axle. Anyone here running in mixed mode?

The rears are contis N2 (265/35/18). Another reason I am considering the change is concerns about the amount of heat that the contis generate even during the mildest sprints. Despite having good grip, these heat can't be good for the tyres life. I have heard rumours of this heat leading to serious chunks of rubber coming off the tyre....on the track.

mine are back: 255/40/zr17 94y PZERO ROSSA
front tyres are: 205/50/ZR17 pzero Perreli

it cost me around £780 for 4 new tyres

But its against the law to have differnt makes on the tyres. I think the tyres are awsome and you can sit at 150 all day long and you dont even know your doing it. Remember the front is thin and walled so if you get a punture no matter where it is REPLACE the tyre as porsche dont allow puncture repairs under any conditions. I had a puncture around a few days after getting them fitted so i repaired it and now it sounds horrible. Getting a new tyre on tuesday tho must be more carefull while driving in carparks. too main nails

There is no way I would have different tyres on the front and rear of my car. Either get 2 new Contis, or just get a full set of some other tyre. There is no point spending loads of dosh on a precision piece of engineering (a Porsche) and then comprimising on tyres. By having tyres with different grip/handling charactaristics front and rear, you aren't giving the chassis a chance.

Please your self as regards mixing tyres but if you look at any longterm serious Porsche owners there cars will have matched tyres. If you want to save money just fit the cheapest tyres you can find.

It's not illegal unless you're mixing radial and crossply tyres which is unlikely on a recent Porsche. It might not be sensible but thats another matter.

Jesus, some people don't even take the time to read the post properly!I am not quite sure where the suggestion on cost being the reason behind the proposed change eminated. Pzero rosso N4s cost more that contisports N2.

If P zeros are better than contis, then I thought I could change the fronts to Pirellis now and do the same with the rears when they are due/close to being due. All I wanted to know was - are there any risks to doing this?

Asked for comments on what the possible risks are not insults like "fit the cheapest tyres you can find". You don't buy a 996 to be cheap - do you?

Don't mix makes of tyres and don't mix N ratings. Full stop, end if story.

Just ask Michelin, if you don't believe me.

I've been asked to drive other people's Porkers fairly regulary because they 'don't feel right' and it has ALWAYS been because the front and rear tyres are of different makes....and you don't need to drive it to find that out!!

Apologies if you thought my post was insulting.
Mixing tyre cause adverse handling no matter how good or expensive the tyres are. Change all 4 for Pirreli PO Rosso or fit Conti`s to the front.

Personally I wouldn't mix makes of tyres on a high performance car.

Try Bracknell Tyres in Bracknell - I bought some of the Pirelli Asymetricos from them for about £450 all in.

Cheers,

Mike.

I had Falken 205's on the front. Goodyear 255 F1's on the back when I picked up my 964. It was horrid at speed, would understeer when approaching 90+mph on long bends.
I changed to Bridgestone S02's and haven't looked back.
Don't mix and match, the characteristics for differing manufacturers are so different it isn't worth the hassle.
