My old Dad has been crashed into by some muppet not looking where he's going and his 2002 VW Bora TDi Red Eye has been written off by the insurance company.

Trouble is, for some reason my Dad really liked that car and he wants to replace with one as near as possible the same spec. So, can anyone tell me what the 'red eye' bit means (his car actually had a red i on the TDi badge)and if there are any other specs that are the same/comparable?

Can anyone point me in the direction of a website with all the info on VW Bora specs for the period 2000 - 2004?

Thanks

It does indeed relate to the red I on the rear badge. The 1.9Tdi lump came in various power outputs, the a red I was supposed to denote the more powerfull 130bhp unit IIRC

I doubt it is accurate

The 90BHP variants at that time had a silver TDI badge, the 110BHP variants had the red 'I' (not red eye), hence the one to have was the red 'I' version.

There are various variants after that - 115BHP, 130BHP, 100BHP, etc, but i think you'd need one with at least 110BHP to have any sort of 'go'..

Also, 'SE's and Sports are worth seeking out for the extra level of interior finish

The first Red 'I's were the 110BHP variant.

It's normally something like this

TDI - 90/100bhp
TDI - 110bhp
TDI - 115/130bhp
TDI - 150bhp

My 110bhp Alhambra (hides in shame) is a red eye. The 90bhp is the less powerful in the range with no red bits. I think it represents the power level within the bhp of the car, most powerful has 2 red letters. Its crap but cost £1500 and runs on veg oil and seats 7 in comfort with aircon, remove the seats its a van.

Half correct, on the petrol GTI models the I was red if it was a turbo and on the non turbo it was silver

I upgraded my red 'I' 110BHP passat by changing the rear badge to be a red 'TDI' badge....

paperbag

Though in my defense i had a tuning box on it taking it to about 130BHP. Which seemed a lot at the time.... (2002)

Its been a while, but there were quite a few variants of the VAG diesels at the time, with 90/100/105/110/130 and 150 variants. I think red 'i' denotes, 110/115bhp, with red 'Di' ones being 130bhp, and red 'TDi' ones being 150bhp, often badged as a GTI on the Golfs...

Its OK, don't feel like you have to justify your car choice.

Thanks, I'm assuming here that the bold letters indicate that they are red on the boot badge?

Almost, I've had a few TDI Golfs and although when first released, the 115bhp had a red I, 130bhp red DI and 150bhp red TDI, after a few months they were coming with random badging, asthough the guys on the production line just stuck his hand in the bucket and used the first badge he got.
