Mercedes SLS AMG Production Starts

Gullwings start rolling out of Sindelfingen factory

Production of the new Mercedes SLS AMG supercar has now started at Mercedes' German Sindelfingen facility.

The Uber-AMG actually starts life at the Magna Steyr factory in Austria, where the aluminium body is made - and in AMG's facility in Affalterbach, where the 571hp, 6.2-litre V8 comes together.

The bodies and engines then make their way to Sindelfingen for final assembly.

Sales of the £150k, 197mph Gullwing supercar (which PH editor Chris-R wangled a go in at Laguna Seca last year - swine) are due to start on 27 March.

Too heavy (although significantly less than the SL), and for me the front looks like a dog, at least in photos.

Why not this face or similar:

Quite a statement given that you've probably never driven it.

It's easy to say something like for example "They should shave 100KG off" but you get to the point where the cost of saving each KG becomes astronomically expensive.

I would put money on it being as light as they could possibly make it within the budget.

WOW !!!

This is soooooooooo much better than the real one. So much smoother and closer to the original feel & expression of the 300 SL Gullwing car.

Mercedes Designers GO HOME !!! All of you !

This is how it should have looked !

I get the feeling Mercedes will have put a lot less thought into this car than the 300SL. Doesn't do it for me at all, unlike the original.

As a contemporary design trying to pay homage to a classic, it fails.

this car has nothing in common with the SL i don't think, so what's the relevance of that? and too heavy? oh yes, it weighs over 1000kilos, it MUST be dull to drive. rolleyes

Geez Mercedes build one of the most exciting cars in recent times and people moan rolleyes

I applaud the way Mercedes has done a modern looking car without trying to make it look identical to the original (bar the Gullwing doors)

Now come on BMW, build something special and lets have a duel!

I'm sure it'll sound/go great. But.. why does it have to look like a vibrator, just like the SLR before it? 0/10 for styling to my eyes.

I Think It Looks fantastic and hope it sounds as good with V8 under the hood.

I think what they have managed very well is to keep the older shapes of the original and modernise them..

Like The rounder front lights/one bar across the grill side vents skinny rear lights..

Good luck to em and cant wait to see one in the flesh.
