Bloody ages on a Subaru Outback, half the front engine out just to change a off-side light bulb.

pretty much same on my impreza as the battery lives right behind one of the headlights.
and the air filter lives behind the other.

Does half the back engine have to come out for the brakelight bulb?

There is an inspection hatch inside the wheel arch makes the job slightky easier if you are long armed and thin.

A MK1 focus is easy to do until you get to the ST or RS, at which point you would probably choose to drive only during the day than bother with the messing about.

Remove the bolts holding the headlight in. Move it forward ( don't take it all the way out). Replace bulb. ( lamp to be pedantic bulbs grow out of the ground). Then push it back and replace the bolts. It's much easier than fking about removing bits of engine or giving it to a stealer. It falls down a bit with xenons and the leveling that needs to be done by computer but hey ho such is life.

Ah, but this works on some cars, for others (The foci I mentioned) you either need to be a contortionist or take the front end apart to get the units out.

It's like that on most cars now. I'm not one for rules, but shouldn't there be some sort of EU directive to state someone must be capable of changing a bulb by the side of the road without tools? Ever wondered why every 206 and Ka seems to have one headlight out? You now know why

206 is no problem to change headlight bulb ! suspect the real issue is gender related .

Mk4 Astra - you have to remove the bumper first to remove the headlamp.

You have to carry bulbs when driving on the continent, by law. But what's the point if bulb changing is a garage job?!! I agree though safety critical things like this *should* be user replaceable

Ford ka's are a complete pain in the arse to do, have to take part of the arch liner off to take the front bumper partly off to release the headlight to change a fking stupid bulb on a car that isn't even mine.

Possibly. Certainly I couldn't work out how to do it when one went pop on my girlfriend's TT. The manual is really helpful "Take your car to the nearest dealer and hand them your wallet on a silver platter".

I can change the headlight bulb on my Corsa one-handed.

Saab 93 + 95 have the same bizare set up where by the headlights need to come out and to do that the indicators and grill units have to come out first...depending if its the drivers or passenger side it can take 5-25min and you need to have the correct Torx adapter which i suspect prevents the majority of people to.

It's not toooo bad on the Elise - wheel off, undo three wing nuts, lift out headlight unit, replace bulb, then reverse.

i had two mk4 astras, you only need to remove the bumper to take out the head light units. Changing the bulbs themselves is fairly easy.
