Best life advice
Discussion
What is the best simple bit of life advice anyone has ever given you?
My old Dad, who was a foundry labourer all his life, said; "Never do a job that any bloke with a big hammer can do". This has stood me in good stead along with something my old boss said: "Always treat the people at the bottom of the corporate ladder well, because they can make your life easy or hard, and may be your boss one day".
What great simple advice have you had which has turned out to be golden?

Professor at uni when I mumbled some excuse about not getting some work in on time: "I always know I'm dealing with a failure when I hear excuses - people who make excuses aren't accepting they failed and therefore won't take responsibility for it and avoiding it happening again". I've never made an excuse since and I can't bear people who do. He did me a huge favour although he did remain an unpleasant prck.

my grandad told me when i was 15 'your old man knows nothing now, but when you are 21 he will have learnt a great deal'.
i thought the old duffer had lost it completely, but when i was 19 i realised what he meant, and since then i have always looked to see if other people knew how to do something rather than re-inventing the wheel.

When you've made a decision, don't look back. (Me)
Never trust a black and white dog. (My Dad)
Don't waste your life on internet forums. (My mum or my missus, probably)
And finally:
Never assume. It makes an ass out of you and me (An old boss. I told him it appeared that somebody else had already assumed before I got there. Then I resigned)
