How big is this child going to be? Or is he going to live in the car?
E Class. HTH.
Funny guy E Class. HTH.
I thought if i am going to buy an estate i might as well get a massive one with a few toys. We'll be doing some decent mileage in it to inlaws in liverpool regularly, and moving house this year so will come in handy there also. And moving forward i'd rather have the problem of how to use the space rather than how do i make space.I've got my mx5 as a diversion

Cheers for the feedback all - keep it coming

Had a couple of W211 E-Class estates, currently have a V70. On the face of it the E-Class has a much bigger boot - in actual fact the more nearly vertical bootlid/back window on the Volvo makes its space considerably more practical. Better seat folding arrangements on the V70 too. On balance, the Merc is a better drive by some distance, but the cheeky Swede trumps it as a usable estate IMHO.
I've had a bunch of V70s and a Saab 9-5 estate, and all are big enough for just about anything normal family life is ever going to throw up. The Merc E class is the largest of all the estates, but obviously you pay more.
Other sensible alternatives are things like XC90s, which have massive boots when the rear seats are not in use, or an S-Max which is similarly flexible.
New babies do seem to come with a whole world of 'essential' stuff that you never knew existed before, so don't under-estimate the space that you will want. Yes, you can manage with small cars, and many people do, but you probably won't want to. I had a 3 series Touring but, with 2 child seats, the back seat was completely full and the boot really isn't very big. You'll also probably end up moving friends' kids of the same age for nursery runs in due course, and in-laws, so larger cars tend to be the way ahead.
ETA - The Mondeo is pretty big too, now I come to think about it.
