Mercedes SLS AMG Roadster Revealed
New roadster comes in any colour you colour it in with...
These are the first 'official' images of the new Mercedes SLS AMG roadster, courtesy of the European patent office where the design has been registered.
Various spy photos of the roadster have been published over the last few months, as well as a number of photoshop mock-ups, but these line drawings should (in theory) provide the first true picture of how the car will look when it reaches production.
The new Roadster will be revealed 'in the metal' later this year, possibly at the Paris motor show when we expect it to feature the new 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8 that AMG showed us in the recreated Red Pig racer last week. UK deliveries are slated to start in 2011.
Meanwhile, these images surely present a first-rate opportunity for PH's Photoshop jockeys to mock-up some fabulous new colour combos for the SLS roadster.
Gulf Oil blue and orange anyone? OK, perhaps not...
Discussion
Will be interesting to see if they price it above or below the coupe as its gullwing doors are surely quite a large part of the appeal...
P.S. Sat in an SLS at the Geneva show. Very cool! Thank you Mercedes for making it accessible to all-comers unlike many other prestige stands where most of the cars cars are generally behind the cordon and/or locked.

I guess this version must have conventional doors which begs the question why does the coupe have gullwing doors?
It can't be a practical, cheap, light or easily engineered alternative to conventionaly hinged doors so why?
I know it's a nostalgic/retro link to the original but even then, WHY?

Well the original SL was the same. It can't be a practical, cheap, light or easily engineered alternative to conventionaly hinged doors so why?

Eitherway it still looks like it's been severly beaten with the ugly stick.
I don't know; I've always associated the Gulf livery more with Ford(GT40) and Porsche(917).
Anyway, I don't care much for the coupe after seeing it in person; rather dull compared to the SLR. However, the 'vert might work better; the original SL always looked very classy and elegant. Either way, I'll have to see it in person before I know for sure.
