So are they legal??
I,ve seen a few pictures of Sagaris,s running with them (DOM @TVR POWER). I have a dark coloured Cerb and think they would suit it but I don't want to get pulled by the cops every time I go out.

So does anyone know before I invest in a set.

From a classic Mini owner speaking from experience (plus this comes up daily on Mini forums), they are not unless your TVR is pre-1973 wink so for shows only.

We tend to get away with on Mini's a little more often given the nature of the car but there are plenty who have been pulled for it and the standard punishment seems to be £30-60 fine and 3 points. In fact several years back on the London to Brighton run the traffic cops set up a checkpoint of sorts several miles from Palace and were pulling ever car they could find for illegal plates. Rather unsporting.

So, illegal, but run the risk if you want as it seems to come down to whichever policeman you happen to drive past.

Its a no points offence but can be sorted by way of a FPN which is now £60 not £30 which it was until recently. If reported for the offence however, it could cost you a lot more. Black/silver plates are only legal on cars of a certain age i.e pre 1973.

So long as you pass the attitude test when stopped you should just get warned to change them (I had a defect notice requiring me to get it changed and signed off by an MOT station before going back to the cop shop)

Carry proper plate (undrilled) in the boot and if stopped explain you now have the proper plates and will be changing them when you get home wink you wont get fined just a "Make sure you do!" smile

Forgot to say make sure the ones in the boot are correctly spaced and no dodgy font.

I have to say I'm with you on that. Given most cops will always look for an excuse to pull you and that they can give you points for it too, it's not really worth it is it? Particularly on a car for which they are clearly wrong. At least with us Mini boys they half look like they're supposed to be on there.

For the record, I keep my black and silvers in the boot and my main plates are quick release for shows and pictures etc.

I believe Dom registered his Sag in Jersey or somewhere, making the B & S plates quite legal on his car. No idea how it's done exactly, but that's what he told me.

Is it possible to get black plates with white reflective characters?

Interesting - I guess he has traders insurance which might make this easier? I think that you should normally insure your car at its registered address which should be where the car is kept.

they tent to give you the full extent of the law if you are a black,or a an asian. in my opinion the best to way to avoid capture,is to do zig zag,so the radar is not fixed on your car or the plate.

Apologies for hijacking the thread but wanted to ask TOV!E something.

Am thinking about a 3/4 size plate sir and have seen your website in the past. What size are we talking about for this please?

Cheers,

M3J. smile

rear lenses removed and refited + new number plate, cant quite see the ribbed style reflective characters in this shot but they look great in the flesh.

Black number plated definitely a no-no. One of our club members got pulled by the rozzers close to Dover last Summer whilst out on a hoon with us. Griff with black number plate.
