Is this a wise thing to do?

Excess is £70.

Repair is £72.50+vat.

If insurance decide to bump the renewal because of this, you'd already be down some cash. Its only a small chip, and seems to fit in the bracket of 'repairable.'

Thanks in advance!

Flanders.

I would pay it out myself. Will save you having to say yes when asked if you've claimed in xx amount of years.

Are you really considering claiming £2.50 on your insurance?

Thats correct, if its repaired there is no excess to pay, only if its replaced, also windscreen claims have no effect on your premium, they never have done.

For the amount we pay might as well use it.

Besides.. What part of +vat means it will be just £2.50?

Some companies have excess on windscreens; some don't. I was about to change from the latter to the former when I noticed the screen had gathered some more chips that I knew wouldn't get fixed free so I made sure I got a new screen before changing companies.

Many insurance companies have arrangements with car glass companies allowing you to have screen chips repaired at no cost to you - the glass co bills the insurers for the full amount.
But you MUST contact your insurers & check. They will also specify which glass co you must use.

Done this with my own car. No effect on premium.

I don't know the exact terms of your contract, just what you've told us here.

You are still looking at claiming £85 (ish) against an excess that may apply of £70. And the "administration" charge of £18.50 when you phone them. Add, potentially, the loss of any no claims bonus you have. And, you will not be able to honestly claim that you've made "no claims" in the last year(s).

Go and have a very serious look at your terms.

Yes, with a fully comprehensive policy they'd normally rather repair for free than risk paying out for a new one.

But that depends entirely on your terms.

I'm asking the question on behalf of a mate, but i'm insured with the same company as him. Having read my policy it only states 'Windscreen excess: £70' or similar.

So, you/he will get £15.

And, in all probability, charged £18.50 for phoning them, and higher premiums in the future.

There should be a phone number on yours/your mates policy that will take him straight to the windscreen Co, they will tell him what cost (if any!) are involved for a repair.
Personally I've never heard of a windscreen claim affecting a NCD.

Although it varies per insurer, windscreen claims usually never affect the premium or the ncb. If its repairable its done so for free if the windscreen needs to be replaced then excess applies. I'd be surprised if an insurer hiked up premium for windscreen claims as they can happen very often.

I had the same dilemma a few months ago, in the end I rang the insurers who said that itself it wouldn't automatically increase the premium, but does count as a claim, which after getting some new quotes would cost me over £500 on next year's policy - not worth it. Ended up paying for it myself for just over £100.

edit: Should add that this was with a big crack so new screen needed not just a repair, apologies.

If it's a repair, the excess of £70 should not apply. This is only for replacement of glass.

Most FC policies cover for free glass repair, although some are inviting a policyholder contribution of between £10-20.

I've claimed for a a chipped windscreen before. No increase of premium, free repair.

This was even with a famously hard to deal with insurance company involving military rank.

windscreen replacement on a fully comp policy will not affect your No claims. It also does not have to be declared as a claim on future insurance.

FWIW I had my screen replaced a few weeks back, total cost £60 under the insurance.
