I have a private plate. Well, the certificate.

How do I go about transfering this my car with as little pain as possible, and whats happens to the tax disc?

Thanks

You can use the certificate to get some plates made up somewhere that does them (Halfords do).

Then you need to go to the DVLA with your V5C, tax disc and MOT certificate, and they'll issue you replacements for each. If you go to an office they'll do the tax disc there and then.

You then need to inform your insurance that you'll be switching the plates over - they may charge an admin fee for new documents.

You're ready to rumble - just bear in mind that the insurance database may take a few days to update so there's a chance you'll get tugged for no tax/insurance. Keep your docs in the car and check on AskMID frequently to make sure you aren't caught short. I kept my old plates in the car as well just in case, although I didn't get stopped.

Think I've got everything...

Does a change of registration add to the number of recorded owners?

No it does not, at least it didn't when I had my old plate a couple of years ago.

Not that I'm aware of. It will show up on a HPI check though - it'll say the following: (excerpt from my old car)

Plate Transfer

The current plate was transferred to this vehicle on 05/03/2009

XXXXX was applied to this vehicle on 10/10/2005
There are no interests recorded against XXXXXX

YYYYYYY was applied to this vehicle on 24/09/2003
There are no interests recorded against YYYYYYY

Edit: The car is/was a 53 plate so the YYYYY entry would state the original plate the car came on.
