Woman killed by exploding tyre

Tragic story, but I have to say, I am generally pretty anxious in the vicinity of a tyre with a bulge in it. Obviously, it doesn't occur to everyone that it might be a good idea to keep well away, or let the air out.
it probably never entered their mind it could be fatal, probably thought it would just make a loud bang, like 99% of the public. Potholes plus very high pressures in tyres nowadays (ultra low profile, low rolling resistance etc) and it's suprising it does not happen more often (explosions I mean).
My neighbour took great delight in telling me he runs his mazda 6 45 series tyres at 50psi nowadays and he gets better MPG......! I'll reming him of it when his centres wear prematurely!
Poor woman, poor husband too.

Utterly sad beyond comprehension.
Had the car got a spare wheel well big enough to hold the wheels that are fitted to the car as standard, then this wouldn't have happened.
Another reason to ban space-savers!
With hindsight (a wonderful thing), they should have deflated the tyre before leaving the scene.

Very sad indeed.
Pressure does not need to be high,I've seen a tyre cage badly damaged at about 25psi.
My tyre man from years ago told me of some horrific stories about tyre fitters being killed or injured badly, and of one who lost an eye from a flying wheel weight whilst balancing, though no doubt these days Health and safety has led to better equipment.

Tyres, hairdressing equipment etc. Life is fragile.
