Behind the scenes insights into Porsche's Geneva show stopper

Porsche has released a new video profiling some of the technology and inspiration for its new 918 Spyder, the hybrid sportscar concept that stole the Geneva motor show last month.

A production future for the 918 Spyder has not been confirmed officially, although it has been reported that the company is trawling dealer lists for potential customers who might be tempted to splash out on a road-going version of the car.

Porsche boss Michael Macht has told reporters 'there is no one inside Porsche who doesn't want to build the 918', and that the car could be on the streets within five years. Other sources have hinted at a limited production run of 1,000 cars if and when the project goes ahead.

The 918 Spyder concept...
The 918 Spyder concept...
...and the 918's (grand) daddy.
...and the 918's (grand) daddy.

Meanwhile this video provides an interesting insight into the future of performance motoring, with an all-too-brief dash of 917 archive footage thrown-in for good measure. Fever!

Absolutely beautiful. I really hope some of the design features filter down into the other models. Oh and that it looks like this when it makes production!

Never noticed before but it looks a bit like an Elise from the side.

I wouldn't be surprised, if the windscreen IS actually off an Elise.
Love it. Should be the shape of a Boxster successor or at least they should transfer the silhouette.
Marko
PS I have an S1 Elise with a little Rotrex supercharger to help things moving...
I spotted that windscreen design the very first time I saw the concept.

In a bit of a Bah Humbug mood at the moment, so apologies, but....

Can they please lose the Hollywood "deep voice" voiceover - Arnie's nowhere to be seen.

917 - apart from the badge and both having four wheels, where is there any comparison?

And now we have Porsche's new acronym - PIP.......???

Quite like the car however wink

At around "1'10" in the video it brags about the power to weight ration being low...

Shouldnt they be bragging thats its high, or have i got this all wrong confused

Sad. Even when talking about a revolutionary new car, all the talk is about what it copies from older designs (917, GT). I do not believe that the classic car shapes from the past looked at reproducing old designs (or calling it DNA for @*%*'s sake).
The future is built on creativity, not recycling - great cars make their own heritage, they don't plunder it!
Having said that, nice car. The wheels are something else - virtually see through!

"resulting in an extremely low power to weight ratio" er, shouldn't that be extremely high?

Stunning car and a sensible way to utilise hybrid technology.

I like the fact that they haven't copied 911 lights etc over as they seem to have gotten themselves into a rut over the years of seeming too scared to try a different look on any new car.

First properly pretty porker in a long time.
