Is anybody else using the JE alternator bracket with the standard alternator ? If so what belt are you using ? The standard belt is a 7 groove one so I got a 7PK1035 which seemed to work as a part number at the local auto factor . It fits on nicely but doesn’t seem happy, It squeals on the water pump pulley. For its size it seems quite stiff so I have tried a 6PK1035 which is more flexible and sorts the squealing. I can see however that it is vibrating on the longer run. Would be interested to know what other people have used and how much tension you have put in the belt.

Sod the belt; the important question is how have you configured the banana adjuster? hehe

Oh, ok... belts it is. I'm using a 7PK1580 but the extra length is needed to cater for the power steering pump on mine. No squealing (tempts fate), but I did take a load of care over checking alignment (JE mentioned this was key). Mine's tensioned so that I can get a good half twist on the run from the crank to alternator and although I did think initially that may be a tad tight, I now think it's spot on as the belt did relax a touch with some miles. Just as well, as it is on minimum adjustment currently...

There was a comment on another thread very recently to the effect JE recommends using a 6 rib belt as you have to overcome any edge chafing, so probably worth sticking with if it's working smile

These threads are getting more and more popular!
If you run a 6pk belt ,surely one side still runs to one side??? or am I just being blonde?

Ah yes the banana, it is dressed to the left sir, so fixed on the top pump bolt.

So what did you do to “adjust” the alignment ? At the moment mine is fitted with the front part of the alternator casing hard against the bracket which seems to put the pulley in about the right place, have you put a spacer between the bracket and the alternator ? John impressed on me that the critical thing was the spacer between the “banana” and the top. I bolted it up put the belt on and measured the gap (9.45mm) and made a spacer to suit. Slight concern is the lower bolt is smaller than the bracket hole so there is a bit of left right slop available.

Does the Crank to Alt part vibrate at about 1500 rpm on yours ?

Yes one side of the 6PK still runs aginst the pulley

As it happens, I didn't need to space it to align as it was spot on, but that is exactly how I would have gone about it... checked it all with a long straight edge and verniers to a notional centreline datum to compensate for the differing lip thicknesses on the various pulleys. I've never noticed significant resonance on the belt on any run but can't say I've been looking for it either. Will have a squint later and confirm; you havent got any foreign objects caught in the grooves anywhere (perhaps hear a ticking noise as a clue)?
