Aston DB9 Is UK's Favourite Car

British public pick Aston, Golf and Mini as their top motors

DB9, Golf GTI, Mini. It's hard to imagine a motor race with this trio sitting on the podium, but these three top the list of the UK's favourite cars of the past quarter-century.

In a survey where motorists were asked to vote for their favourite car from a list of 30 of the most iconic cars from 1985-2010, 10 per cent of Brits picked the Aston Martin DB9 as their favourite, while five per cent of those asked plumped for the VW Golf GTI. Third place went to the BMW Mini, which polled four per cent of the vote.

As well as the winning cars the poll, conducted by YouGov on behalf of Direct Line to help celebrate the insurance company's 25th birthday, included such disparate motors as the Ford Mondeo, DMC DeLorean and Audi Quattro. Bizarrely, the Jaguar XJ claimed second place, but only among the motorists of Wales and eastern England.

So that's the general public's favourite cars of the past two-and-a-bit decades - what's the PH favourite? Gentlemen, start your suggestions...

My choice would probably be either the 993 Turbo or E46 M3. Both were truly awesome when they were launched.

I'd take a V12 Vantage over a DB9 any day of the week.

It's sad to see something as mundane as a Golf or MINI so high up. Favourite car of the decade and people choose £20k cars? Is that as far as the average person's car horizons stretch? Are these people saying they favour a cheap VW over a Ferrari, Porsche, Mercedes, Jag or BMW?

Or perhaps the list looked something like this:

Aston Martin DB9
VW Golf GTI
MINI Cooper S
Daewoo Matiz
Fiat Seicento
Ssangyong Rodius
Rover City Car
VW Fox
G-Wiz
Seat Toledo
VW Jetta

So a survey, that asked "motorists", or rather a select few, which hardly represents then entire motoring community in Britain, from a limited and sanatised list dictating that the top 3 would at least be 3 of the 30 cars chosen by the organisers no matter what.

Evidently a highly accurate and scientific conclusion then.....

I think the old Skyline GTRs should be somewhere high up on the list, especially the R32 GTR which was the car that finally put the GTR badge on the map
