Vinyl Body Wrap - Costs, Pros and Cons
Discussion
Hi all,
Once again I need the advice from the brain of PH.
What are the the pros and cons of vinyl body wrapping.
The reason for asking is I've just seen a white VX220 and thought it looked quite good.
As I soon would like to get a VX, I was just wondering what the pros, cons and costs where of vinyl wrapping, or should I not really bother. Also, would the DVLA need to be told as the car has changed colour from the original?
Thanks in advance
Ben

I have a vinyl wrapped VX220 (see my profile for a picture), Back on Track in Guildford did it. I also know the VX that has the white wrap (it's matt white). Pros are it protects the paint underneath, you can have a colour change without it being permanent, if a part of it gets damaged it's cheaper to re-wrap the panel as opposed to painting it. Cons are its not very robust, it gets easily damaged for instance from stones and also the door edges if they touch on something when you open them. The vinyl cant get right into the door hinge area and such places, my car is silver underneath so is not too bad in this respect but if you had, say, a red car and had it wrapped yellow it would look odd. There seems to be a great variation in prices, most places can get the vinyl right on the panel surfaces but the difference is the way its finished at the edges and under panels and in the door shuts, worth paying a bit more for someone who gets these places right. Back on Track did an excellent job on mine, not the cheapest and not the most expensive, but the best I've seen in quality of work.Once again I need the advice from the brain of PH.

PS. If you want a VX I know of a nice Europa blue one just gone on the market

The problem with vinyl wrapping, is that you can't easily stick the vinyl inside the door areas...so it may look OK from a distance, but when you open the door or lift the bonnet you will see the original paint.
But is that really a problem? Vinyl wrapping is really only a temporary covering. And until manufacturers start painting the cars matt black from the factory there will always be this disappointment. GC8 said:

You would need to at least tell the DVLA cos the next time you go past an APNR police car THEY will!
This isnt brilliant advice Dave: the car hasnt changed colour. Adding colour changes to the vehicles history will cause a lot of questions/problems at sale time too.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
