***NEW Yokohama Advan AD08 Tyres just fitted - Review***
Discussion
Hi there
Well was looking at some new tyres for the EVO X but wanted something to give serious performance and feedback. Car was previously fitted with Vredstein Ultrac Sessentas which were good in the dry and a good wet weather tyre, but I felt they lacked a bit of communication and knew there were better dry grip tyres.
So I started looking at tyres designed for both road and track use, I narrowed it down to three, Toyo R888, Toyo R1R and NEW Advan AD08.
Toyo R1R was favourite at first as its factory fit on the EVO X FQ-400 but all feedback and reviews I could find rated the new Advan AD08 as the better tyre especially in the wet, so I did some research.
I found the following out:-
Toyo R888 - Treadwear 100/5mm tread depth (approx 5000 miles use) £180 per corner
Toyo R1R - Treadwear 140/6.5mm tread depth (approx 8000 miles use) £160 per corner
Advan AD08 - Treadwear 180/8mm tread depth (approx 10,000+ miles use) £188 per corner
So I went with the AD08 due to it having full tread depth and slightly better wear rating plus all reviews pointing towards it been better in colder/wet conditions making it ideal for the UK.
I've now done nearly 200 miles of country roads in the EVO since having them fitted, the first 30 miles were in damp/wet conditions with temperature around 7c and they seemed to hold the road just as well as the Vredsteins whilst providing a lot more feedback and bear in mind the tyres would still have been releasing the chemicals that preserve the tyre.
The next 100 plus miles have been done in dry conditions with temperatures around 12c and the dry grip is simply out of this world, leagues ahead of the Vredstein in dry grip and so much more progressive and communitive too. I can easily take some of my favourite corners a good 5-10mph faster than I could on the Vredsteins but more so these tyres inspire so much more confidence. The car seems to love them and so do I, the EVO X has never been one of its strong points on feedback but since fitting these tyres its transformed the feedback and because of that I can push right to the limits and due to their progressive nature remain in control.
Also surprisingly the ride is no harsher which I find surprising as these tyres have steel inserts in the walls to stop the tyres squirming under hard cornering. Road noise seems un-changed.
No doubt about it the R888 would be even better again in the dry but the R888 is weak in the wet and very prone to aqua planing and they don't last long. These are much better in the wet and in theory should last nearly twice as long.
Needless to say a huge thumbs up, way better than any road tyre I've used previously which have been the Vredsteins, T1R's, F1's and PS2's.
Yokohama have stock of the 245/40/18 which is what the EVO X uses, but unsure about other sizes.
Hope you find this feedback helpful.

Oh and before I forget, here is a link to the tyres so you can see what they look like:-

What I forgot to mention above was braking performance, the way the car stops now is simply unbelievable, the ABS simply does not trigger, the car just hauls up. You can be doing over 120 leptons and hit the breaks and like 1-2s later with no fuss your down to like 50-60mph without even trying, just so impressive.
Just need some uprated pads now to take advantage of the new grip and prevent brake fade.

Good review - I was wondering what boots to buy for my VIIRS so may have to give these a try.
Off topic, If you want to improve feedback and cornering speed even more - Wayne at Arneside motorsport has probably the last two sets of EXE TC dampers in the UK for the X
I've had them fitted to my car last week and they are incredible bits of kit - they work the tyres so much better than the after-market ralliart dampers I had on. They also offer a much more supple ride. For the money, they're an absolute bargain.

Thanks for the review, whether I get these or R888s next remains to be seen but as others have said - it's good to get a review. Keep us posted with your progress with them, please.
Cheers, Greg.
Remember for dry grip I can't see these competing against the R888. Cheers, Greg.
The R888 is a very sticky tyre, 100 treadwear VS 180 treadwear.
But the AD08 is better in wet conditions and should last longer.

Great review, too bad we don't see more of these!
Just a side note, the treadwear ratings are next to useless between brands as they don't have a common reference point, and each brand makes their own rules so the Yoko 180 could be worse than the Toyo 100!
This man speaks the truth! My BS RE050A's lasted 12,000 miles with a treadwear rating of 140 and so did my FK452's with a 300 rating! Tredwear ratings are entirely made up and entirely irrelevant.Just a side note, the treadwear ratings are next to useless between brands as they don't have a common reference point, and each brand makes their own rules so the Yoko 180 could be worse than the Toyo 100!

Just to say the drive into work this morning along the back roads was rather sublime, such an impressive tyre, very happy with them.
