Ferrari Seat On The Cards For Webber?

Red Bull drivers linked to Prancing Horse

The F1 circus has barely reached Europe, but already the speculation is beginning as to who will be where for the 2011 season.

The latest rumour is that Mark Webber - who is on a rolling contract with Red Bull - could end up with Ferrari next year. Although no doubt Red Bull boss Christian Horner is going to be keen to keep hold of the driver currently leading the F1 world championship...

Red Bull's other driver, Sebastian Vettel, is also keen to make a move to the Prancing Horse - but not quite yet.

"I am very happy with Red Bull, I am not going anywhere else, but in the future, I don't know," Vettel told El Pais newspaper. "I want to fight for the world championship, and if you look at the past, Ferrari has always designed very competitive cars.

"Why not go there in a few years? Ferrari is unlike any other team, it's a legend. There are other brands that achieve great success, but Ferrari is special."

Bernie Ecclestone - known to be a big fan of Vettel - is also said to be keen to see the young German at Ferrari. And what Bernie says has a strange habit of coming true (except for "there will be a British GP at Donington")...

Webber deserves all the success that comes his way, he's always been fast just never had the car to prove it!

Great to see him showing his younger team mate the way round!

Assuming Ferrari are on the wishlists of each, they can just sit back and select from Vettel, Kubica and Rosberg when the time suits them. I can't imagine them really wanting to go for Webber when they've got Massa already, who I would say is more then equal in value to the team.

I wouldn't want to leave a team with Adrian Newey in it unless he came too. Surprised that these two are talking about moving elsewhere when everyone else on the grid wishes they were driving a Red Bull car!

Why would you move when you are clearly in the best team. Its not a fluke either, red bull have been putting the right people in place over the years and it is now paying dividends.

Just remember that before Shuey it was a long time since Ferrari had won anything, same could happen again, no guarantee of success at the prancing horse.

Why move? Webber and Red Bull obviously work well together and his car is really performing, so I don't see why he'd change. Of ocurse, it could be a bargaining chip to improve next years Red Bull contract...

I can't see Weber going, Ferrari are more likely to chose the younger driver as a replacement for Massa. If one of the RedBull drivers don't win the World Championship this year and the only reason neither would is the reliability of the car then they could well both leave.

Why would anyone want to partner Alonso with his rep?!? Even ignoring the fact that the RBR car is easily the quickest out there and AN is every bit Ross Brawn's equal...

Never understood the fascination with Ferrari...

Also Webber & Vettel are likely to be competing with each other biggrin.

And we all know how that pans out

There's a trend amongst drivers to move to the 'big' teams at one point during their career.

These teams have traditionally been either Ferrari or McLaren. Williams up until a few years ago aswell.

The theory goes, I think, that the likes of Red Bull, Brawn, Renault, et al may fight for the championship for a year or two years, but the big teams are always there or thereabouts.

There is then the heritage aspect of driving for, and winning with, one of the teams whom the great drivers have also driven for.

Finally there is the appeal of winning with one team, then moving to do it in another team - this drove Schumacher to Ferrari and Alonso to McLaren for example. I can see Vettel and Webber thinking
"Win the title with Red Bull, then go and do it in another team"

FWIW, I think Vettel will end up at Mercedes - they won't let him through their fingers like they let Schumacher go all those years ago.

I'd argue that i'd rather have AN in the team than RB.

Most of RB's success was at a Ferrari that had a huge budget and most of the most talented men in F1 throughout all its departments. Yes he did well with Brawn, but you could argue that since making the most of a loophole and dominating the start of the season his team faded and only just hung on.

Newey on the other hand seems to produce outstanding cars where-ever he goes, and often comes up with a completely new way of looking at the cars that others struggle to catch up with.

Undoubtedly two of the most important and talented guys in F1, but personally i think i'd rather have Newey on my team.

God only knows what monstor of a car the two could produce if they ever ended up on the same team.

I'm a big fan of Webber but I can't see him going to Ferrari, he's better off where he is TBH. Ferrari's line-up next season will be Alonso and Kubica.

Couldn't agree more, all they would need is a driver with the aggressiveness of LH and the calmness/smothness of JB and the title could be sewn up before a wheel turns............

Since Webber's name is in the title I though this was an apt place for this comment;

Whilst reading the Le Mans 1955 thread, I got flicking through a few other 'Le Mans' crashes on the tube......

Was only 13 at the time, but completely forgot that Mark Webber was the driver in one of the CLR Mercedes that flipped.

This is pretty much a templated news story run by F1 sites in between GPs - any time <insert non-Ferrari driver name here> puts in a couple of good performances a "rumor" surfaces that <insert non-Ferrari driver name here> is going to be moving to Ferrari in X years time. The term "silly season" has the word "silly" in it for a reason!
