997 turbo pcm3 bluetooth issue
Discussion
The Iphone doesnt support SIM access profile Bluetooth and so it cant be used with PCM3. I had to return to the OPC to have the SAP disabled and the PCM3 configured for Hands free mode, it also disables the SIM slot(which I wasnt using anyway)
Sadly the phone reception is now way inferior and it cost me 92 quid to "downgrade" the firmware

This is a real annoyance with the PCM3. The telephone module has 2 totally separate modes of operation:
1) SAP - This uses the in-built mobile phone in the PCM-3 and either a SIM card in the slot in the unit (or the SIM card in your mobile phone via Bluetooth's SIM Access Protocol - SAP - if your phone supports it).
2) Handsfree - This uses the PCM-3 as a Bluetooth headset, disabling all internal mobile phone functions in the unit and instead using your handset to do all the connections/transmissions/reception. This uses Bluetooth's Handsfree protocol that is supported by just about every mobile phone out there.
The functionality is different with each mode and some phones, notably the i-Phone, won't work in SAP mode - you need to have the unit recoded into Handsfree mode. The monumentally annoying thing is that the user can't switch the unit between these modes of operation - it can only be done with a PIWIS at the dealer at about £75 a time! Why the hell Porsche can't just put a button on the unit to let us choose which mode we want is completely beyond me. It stops us experimenting with which functionality suits us best and penalises people with phones that don't support SAP. Crazy!

thank you all for such feedback , info and links etc . looks like im going to have to cough up the 75 squids .....
I thought about doing the same but decided to buy a new phone in the end. Also I have been told but not exactly sure, that if your dealer converts it to handsfree only, you may lose some of the PCM3 features, ie text display etc etc....

This is completely true. Text display is lost if you go handsfree. However I'm not sure if you can access the external phone's (as distinct from the external phone's SIM card's) phone book if you use SAP. So you win some and lose some functionality depending on which mode you choose. At £75 a pop to experiment though, it's bloody expensive to find out!!
Before you spend any money, you have tried initiating the bluetooth link from the iPhone rather than the car, haven't you?
Put the PCM to the bluetooth pairing screen, but don't initiate the link. On your iphone, go to the Bluetooth settings, and click on the PCM to pair.
I believe this will work if you've got the "Preparation for Mobile Phone" option. If you have "Telephone Module for PCM" then it won't.

Right , update . Firstly , thanks for the advice . Now today I went to the opc and was told that sometimes the first link can be a problem . They plugged a computer into the car and then linked the phone ( after several seconds delay ) . Now the iPhone is working perfectly and has full use of the phonebook and is fantastic ( I even have a choice of ringtones ! ) .
It was a free service though so odd that some paid , but I'm not sure if it was the same process described earlier ?

Cheers for this , I had tried this and it would find the cpm but then lose connection .very odd but apparently not unknown with 3 g iPods .Put the PCM to the bluetooth pairing screen, but don't initiate the link. On your iphone, go to the Bluetooth settings, and click on the PCM to pair.
