Lexus style rear lights.....
Discussion
I know there have been a lot of threads about the dreaded rear lights.......but has anyone fitted the Mondeo mark 1/Lexus style light on the noble?
I've found a couple of sets that I think look better than the standard (awful) Mondeo lights......
here's the link.......

They are not the light I'd choose, but I want to give them a try as an alternative.
Will they fit like for like? Or will I have to cut the clam?

We all know the rear lights are MK 1 mondeo salloon - from what i can tell, the years of MK 1 were 1993 - 2000, however, from what ive read, the 1996 MK 1 was updated, did this affect the light size/shape in anyway?
Out of interest, do we know which year the MK 1 lights on our 3R's is from? Or are they all the same?
MK 1 restyled
BE CAREFUL : in 1996, the Mondeo 1 was restyled; it is not the second Mondeo.
The Mk1 restyled Mondeo launched in October 1996 saw three of the Mondeo's biggest criticisms addressed: its bland styling, the bad performance of the headlights, and the cramped rear legroom. The lowering of specification levels around that time (e.g. air-conditioning and alloy wheels became optional on the UK Ghia models) may have indicated a desire by Ford to cut costs and recoup some of the huge sums invested in the original design. These specification levels were improved again in 1998 as the Mondeo approached replacement.
The Mk1 restyled saw almost every external panel replaced, leaving only the doors and roof the same as the original Mk1 model. Even the extractor vents on the rear doors were replaced by a panel bearing the name Mondeo. The most notable change was the introduction of a version of Ford's corporate 'oval' grille. The saloon version featured some distinctive rear lights. These incorporated an additional reflector panel that extended around the top and the side of the rear wings. Unlike the iterations seen on the heavily facelifted Scorpio and Mk4 Fiesta during the previous year, this facelift was well-received.

Do the Hyundai Sonata lights fit the 3R?
www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=450006
Also, tinting or smoking looks like a viable option

How does the indicator appear to people when flicked on, through the tint?

Important to me was the fact that the light unit still needed to fuction. There is very little difference, we gave the lense two light coats, after each one tried the lights, it works well. For those who haven't seen the thread :

Hyundai Sonata lights are "OEM" on US Nobles, they do not fit UK models as the clam is a different moulding, and it's not just the size of the hole, the whole rear grille area is deeper right across the rear of the car.
The only lights that fit a std UK clam are Mondeo MK1 saloon (with boot) the ones commonly available on E-Bay are for the hatch back only.
Marcos used to produce lights that fitted (they are the afterburners you see with a perspex cover over) but they have gone bust, Noblemods also had an alternative but he has also packed up.
You could approach an aftermarket manufacturer to make some in a small volume but this has been done before and the price while at first was (cough) reasonable, as soon as there was a real commitment to buy the price suddenly went to a rediculous amount.IIRC £600ish.

Ive decided to smoke mine too, at least until a decent and reasonably priced rear light mod option becomes available to us..
Been told Tamiya Paint is best to use rather than Halfords...
Only trouble is, there's two types, polycarbonate paint and acrylic paint.
Apparently polycarbonate paint is for 'lexam'(?) plastic and acrylic paint is for 'abs'(?) plastic.
Anyone knowledgable on the type of plastic used on the rear lights? Which one should i use for best results please?
Also - should i spray outside or inside the lights?
Thanks, any advice appreciated and will post pics once complete

Hi Kev, just grabed mine from the garage where it has sat for the last year or so. I sprayed mine on the outside and have washed the car with no problems with the lacquer, its seems robust. The other reason is it can be easily removed if needed. Whats in it I have no idea, the can reads "is an opaque coloured film applied to the rear lights....when applied correctly lights work as before.....the tint can be removed without damage.....do not spray the reflector.......a reduction in light output may occur if too much lacquer (more than two coats)is applied.
Kev, if you want it, I would be happy to post you the,(at least half full) can foc, if your interested, on the understanding if there is any left, you would do the same if someone else was interested, pm your address if interested.
