It appears that Admiral have discovered yet another way to bend the consumer over the barrell. Since handing the van back i needed to grab a cheap little run around to tide me over for a few months.

Spotted a car local, seemed alright, enough tax + mot to get me through the months i need it for and cheap enough. Rang around a few insurance places for quotes, Admiral gave me a quote of £1015.85 per annum with a DD of £111.30. Seemed decent enough, given the next cheapest quote was £1800. This is for a cheap little poncy 1.4 106...

Went and viewed the car today, Stuck a deposit on it to come home sort insurance out and go back at weekend to drive it back. Happy as pie. That is, until i ring admiral and give them my refrence number.
"Sorry sir, That refrence number is corresponding with the correct name and date of birth your giving me but the address is wrong"
"Alright, try XXX"
"No"
"What about XXX? These are the only addresses you could possibly have on file for me"
"no sir, its nothing like any of them - not even close enough to be a typo its completely different"

Bugger, Thinks i. Nevermind though, Just need to go through the details again and then all will be honky dory.

No. Course not. Doesn't work like that. Turns out the best they can offer me now (On exactly the same details.) is £1994. With no pay monthly choice.

So i'm now stuck with a deposit on a car that i can't afford to insure that i bought purely on the insurance quote they'd already given me - which i could afford!.

I need a car by monday. If i don't have a car, i'm going to lose out on a job offer i've had.
So, PH massive - What do i do?.

Can anyone think of anyone that could possibly give me a half-decent quote at 22 years old on a poxy little hatchback without arse-raping me just because its coming to me pre-lowered (But can/will be raised if thats an insurance problem.)

I'm guessing you have tried all the comparison websites?

Run it through Bell's website and I'd be surprised if it wasn't cheaper. They're the same group as Admiral, but seem to specialise in young drivers with low NCB. I'm your age and they're by far the cheapest for me (undercutting Admiral by a couple of £££)

I'm assuming your original quote was given over the phone by Admiral? If so, then call them back and ask to speak to a supervisor. Ask them to listen to the original call (it should be recorded) to establish what has gone wrong. If it's been a mistake at their end they may (but may not) be prepared to honour the original quote.

A couple years ago I was sorting out insurance for my wifes car using the comparison sites.

Address fields go:

Line 1 (House Name)
Line 2 (Road)
Town
County
Postcode.

Get a decent quote with the AA (not the cheapest but the cheapest ones I wouldn't have touched with a bargepole) and go to buy.

Check through all the details, everything is correct except the address is missing Line2
Correct house name, town, county, postcode etc, just the road name field is blank
Think "I'll just correct that" and type in the road name and the premium almost doubles!
WTF??

Policy documents found their way to us OK without it, and then we called them to get them to correct it and add in the road name afterwards - no change in premium. hehe

Admiral moved out of my good books when they sent me a letter declaring that they will not be able to renew my insurance this year due to the age of my vehicle rolleyes and then when getting a quote from LV they somehow came to the conclusion that they wouldn't be able to insure me due to "the high performance nature of the vehicle" rofl

For those that don't want to look through my profile the "high performance vehicle" is a Land Rover Series 3.

Supposedly a supervisor is going to be calling me back tomorrow morning to deal with it. I won't be waiting by the phone.

Just tried to get a quote from LV and got the following message:

"We are unable to insure you for the following reason:
Sorry, we are unable to provide you with a quotation as
Due to the car's high performance, we regret that we are unable to provide cover at this time."

It's a fking 1.4 litre 106 not a ferrari. When did insurance get so bloody hard to take out?

Same problem as me then, wonder if their online quoting system is buggered.

Young, Male driver with 0 no claims discount and living in a high-risk post code area. £1015 is incredibly cheap.

I'm probably boring people to tears with this now but have you thought about getting a classic car? (I know you already have a deposit down on another car but hear me out)

I have just bought insurance for a 500SEC (5 litre V8 coupe) for 239 fully comp, I am 31 but classics are usually from 21 onwards so you should be ok, there are loads of sub £1000 classics that you could get that would be quicker than the peugot and faster not to mention dramatically cheaper!! Parts can be easy to come by too (not for an SEC mind!)

OP, have you tried getting quotes with older, lower risk drivers added as named drivers to your policy? (Parents are a good example to use). Provided they're lacking in points or accidents that make them higher risk then they should bring your premium down substantially. This knocked 100's off my premium, and i'm 23 with 3 year nbc in a very low risk area.

The above technique isn't fronting, since you're still the main driver and perfectly legal. It gives the perception to the insurance company that risk on the car is spread between low and high risk drivers, so its a safer bet for the insurer. It definitely brings quotes down from the Admiral group (speak from experience).

My Elise was £1300 to insure when I was 22 (with Elephant). Has insurance really gone up that much in five years?

I phoned Admiral for a quote on a 1.8 Astra 5dr Hatch I was buying from a friend. The lady in their call centre didn't even know what a Vauxhall Astra was! but I managed to spell it out and confirm the details. The quote was a little more than my current car but that was expected.
Completed the purchase of the car then phoned them back to confirm. The bloke said 'Ok, that was on the 1.9 Diesel van?'
Van!!! Errr no.
Fortunatly the car was cheaper.

EFS.

Try ringing Adrian Flux. When I bought my Clio 182 it had the Cup suspension and spoilers factory fitted, which made it modified for insurance, and Flux were way cheaper than any of the mainstream insurers.
