Hello all. I am looking to buy a vehicle that has not been taxed since 2004. I cannot be certain that the vehicle has been declared SORN in that time. Does anyone foresee any problems when I register the vehicle in my name and apply for a tax disk if the previous owner has neglected to declare SORN?

Is there any way I can be held liable?

Thanks in advance!

I had the same a few months ago when I bought the tiv. I rang the DVLA and they said not to worry as any back tax or fines owed they would go after the previous owner. Make sure you send the V5 recorded delivery with the correct handover dates on.

Up to the previous owner to declare SORN on the vehicle when circusmtances dictated this should be done.

As a new owner up to you to go ahead and tax but if there is to be any delay in doing so then bang in a SORN yourself to cover.

I thought if the vehicle hadn't been taxed before the SORN laws came into force, there is no need (for the original keeper) to register it SORN. Once its been taxed/ sold, the SORN regulations will then apply to it

Only applies Paul if vehicle before 31.1.1998 if

(1) No RFP in force
(2) No liocence issued since
(3) vehicle not used on public road

No SORN required.
