Hi

I've got a 03 Z4 with an electric roof. Recently it's stopped working, before I take it to the garage I thought I'd check with you guys for advice.

The catches wirl open and the roof is ready to fold back but the motor that pulls it back doesn't kick in.
This leads me to think it might be just a fuse gone (or wishful thinking).

I've always helped it along as it wasn't very strong (I wonder if this helped break it!).

Any ideas?

Dan

Water in the motor.

There is a pipe to channel rain water, if it gets blocked it fills the hood motor with water.

There is no nice way to say this.

You need a new motor and, you need to remove the hood to get to it.

If I recall there is something you can move to disengage the motor. Then you can move the hood by hand, until you fix it.
I think it was in the boot.

Too late for the OP, but check the drain holes are clear from the hood. They exit under the rear arch and clog up with crap. They have a filter in them from memory - no idea why as they drain to the road??

There is a big button on the top part of the centre console next to your shoulder. I think this released the mechanism for manual operation. I don't know if you can open/close manually forever or whether this is a one-use close function.

your motor is dead.

new one from bmw £250

its a few hours to fit it. easy job to do yourself.

in the mean time the red pull in the boot pull out 5mm and twist so it doesnt go back in. you can use the buttons as normal to release the hood from the body then pull it up and down by hand. when pulling back up use the big push thing above the storage cupboard to release it.

After you have replaced the motor its a good idea to clean your drains often. its very simple and takes about 15 mins to do both sides.

did mine today as my roof died and im waiting for my new motor. didnt need to take the wheel off but i wanted to clean them anyway.

but you dont need to remove the whole wheel liner like in that guide. Just the 3 screws on the smaller one and the screw under it. take that off and you can see the end of the drain.

You can see the drain end below,

Didn't even think of that.

Got any hints on how to get those stud/clips off without snapping them?

don't need to remove them to clear drains so don't touch them

you have 3 x 8mm and one 10mm to remove. if it's not one of those dont touch it.

you will also need some tubing.. i used some stuff i have for my fish tank which fits amazingly.. its about 8mm. push it up and squirt water up it, then push it up a bit more etc.. gets all the crap out.
