Video: New BMW 1-Series M On The Move

Promo vid shows off diminutive M car for the first time

BMW has released this teaser video of the long-rumoured and only recently confirmed BMW 1-series M.

The new car, likely to be called 135i M, is due in 2011 and will use a pumped-up version of the 3.0-litre turbocharged straight six already installed in the regular 135i, rather than an all-new engine.

But whatever the powerplant or name, the new hot 1-series looks like it's going to be pretty exciting. In fact, if the slightly scary German chap in the video is to be believed, "you will not leave the car, you will not give the keys to anybody else".

Although that sounds a bit like a sinister threat, we think he means that the car is going to be so much fun that you won't let anybody else have a go, should you buy one. We hope.

I am actually really looking forward to see what the finalised version of this car is going to be like, it has so much potential IMO! Really hope its everything it should be, I will certainly be very interested if it is! Anyone have an idea on the release date?

Likewise, bumpers look nicely beefed up, keen to see what power etc it will be putting through the rear wheels too!

No doubt it will cost near 40k though?

Will it rev like an M, or be all mid-range like the 135i, that's the question

My point was that it's hardly been a long time since BMW made a small M car, you could still get a Z4M new in 2008

It is going to be around 1500kgs though i would think

Looks decent, nicely pumped up arches... Already quite like the 1 coupe, reckon this will be a decent motor and maybe my next purchase...

Any idea on power output

I'm going to be keeping a very close eye on the details of this car as they are released.

If the power, peformance, weight and price all stack up I'm going on the waiting list pronto.

Don't fook it up BMW, you got it so right with the 130i (my favourite of all the cars I have ever owned).

it's going to be called the 1M Coupe and not a 135i M.

It doesn't use the current N55 as seen in the 135i, but the older 135i engine the N54.

Basically it's the same engine as seen in the Z4 35is.

335bhp is disappointing when most modestly tuned 135i's push out 340bhp-360bhp... the N54 has always been a little underated and most stock engines dyno around 315-325bhp.

Weight is going to remain similar too.

Major advantages are the LSD, improved brakes, improved suspension (hopefully without the 135's tendency to understeer), and great body kit.

Car and Driver thinks it sounds a little muted, so I am hoping the production version will have a quad BMW Performance exhaust as the current 135i's Peformance exhaust is amazing.

Don't expect the rev limit or the power delivery to be much different than the current 135i - excellent from 1400rpm-5500rpm, but struggles a little at 6200-7000rpm.

this is where the bmw m people* will work some of the magic, m's have always performed well at heady heights and it wouldnt take too much to get it to work hard in the upper rev zones, it will have the quad pipes too, which will be a treat
