Recommend alternative to CDR-24 with USB/iPod and phone

Interested in upgrading the single CD CDR24 in my soon to be acquired 06 Cayman S.

Would like it to have either USB or Ipod connectivity and phone (preferably cable or SIM tray as per PCM2 as I have a spare card) but blue tooth minimum.

I have seen some models with an aftermarket Pioneer AVIC D3 (no longer made) but was wondering what else people may have installed.

I've put a Clarion FZ709E in my 996 turbo, mostly because I wanted cable free bluetooth streaming for music.

It's got USB too (although I've not tried using it yet) and if I remember correctly, you can get an ipod cable for it.

It has hands free, and I've been told it is crystal clear (it is in the car too).

Pure touch screen, so no glitzy buttons which is another reason I chose it. However - having used it for a couple of months, I don't think touch screen is the best thing in the car - you seem to have to spend longer looking at the stereo when you want to do something.

Negative points :

Apart from the touch screen aspect, the one annoyance is that it's number matching is a bit rubbish for incoming calls. I have all my numbers stored as +(country code) - but when UK numbers call, the number will be 0... and the Clarion doesn't recognise the match. So either you have to live with that or - as I did - change the half dozen numbers I actually use in my phone book before downloading it to the Clarion.

Apart from these points I'm pretty happy with it. The streaming works well. Oh - note that it doesn't have a CD slot at all - it's purely radio and USB / ipod / bluetooth.

... I have and that looks like it is Single DIN; i.e. not the double space option... but I'll see what the offer in that range for double din spaces

I put a Pioneer AVIC-HD3BT in my 05 Boxster a couple of years ago. It replaced the CDR24 and was an absolutle revelation. As it happened although it is available, I wasn't interested in connecting an iPod because I preferred to stuff my all music on to the hard disk, but it also had a very good SatNav, total phone integration as well as the usual radio. As a bonus, you can even get a rear-view camera option if you're unable to reverse your car.

Here's the spec: AVIC-HD3BT, but it doesn't cost anything like that price now, especially if you buy secondhand.

After I fitted the kit, the next visit to the OPC produced gasps of amazement. I've sold the car now but in my estimation, in terms or absolute functionality it is still streets ahead of the PCM3.

Agree, it can be done but you have to consider whether it's really worth doing. I wouldn't go there, but it depends how much you want to change the system.

Would anyone specify Bose with a CDR24?

OEM that's thousands... equivalent of 2 sets of tyres all round, and I know where I'd rather spend my money. I've got too much Lotus-like tinkering in me so I don't see the basic ICE as anything sacresanct. I had BOSE/PCM2.1 in my 997.1 C2S and it was lovely but it still didn't have iPod I know there's an aspect that uncompressed CD will create a better sound, but this isn't my living room so there are some limitations on what you should reasonably expect and yes fair play the BOSE did exceed that but did I need it? And if I get a tuneful exhaust.......

So no BOSE setup, so in my mind ripe for the picking on the basis that I can blend it in tastefully with a double din fascia kit.

Mmmm. I think it may be cheaper to buy a USB based one and a separate portable hard drive, but it does seem that Pioneer produce some nice alternatives

Bought mine for a fraction of that on eBay and almost sold it the same price the next year when I took it out.

Depends exactly what you're looking-for, but a different option would be something like the Dension Gateway 500 or possibly the Gateway Lite (MOST version) which would give you an iPod connection. The 500 is best used with the PCM but it can work with the CDR24 as well.

Yes. Looks like the Gateway Lite will work with CDR 24 but as it is not Text capable the functionality of it is about as basic as it comes.

I think if you had a BOSE upgrade you'd want to maintain the BOSE amp and hence the MOST-bus interface between the two. However as mine appears to be std quality amp I may not miss it.

With the Dension kit it's very much an enhancement rather than being a replacement, so you keep the Bose if you have it. However you're right, the text output on the CDR24 is poor.
