I have a "thing" for them,
however, after much searching, it seems that they are a right bugger to find good threads/articles about.
So, the point being to this thread, has anyone got any good stories/articles/videos or anything else to share regarding the wonderful things that are sleepers!?
Doodles.

Depends what sort of sleeper you are after. If you want a generic manufacturer produced car, then you need to look for stuff on the audi rs6, volvo v70r etc etc. I would rather go for something completely different, and contact the beardmore bothers(who specialise in putting different en gines in moggy minors) and get them to sling a coosie engine in a minor for me, with standard paint and minilite rims it would be ace
Look up some proper sleeper cars:
- VW Passat W8
- Volvo S80 T6 (to a certain degree)
- Most BMW M cars.
- Almost any AMG, especially the old '65 series, complete with 612bhp and 784lb/ft torque... in the S-Class, CL and SL. Mental.
- Volvo S60R (manual though, the auto is much, much slower according to actual figures).
- Lotus Carlton
- Audi RS models. Especially the old RS4... RS2 was a little more obvious but still pretty sleeper-ish...
I love these kind of cars.

I remember seeing iirc a passat (diesel?) with something outrageous like 440 brake whilst looking almost completely standard, that was the sort of thing I was after. Something that looks utterly boring and generic, but would blow your head off acceleration wise/make the person in the corsa trying to race you off the lights rather embarrassed.
edit: Cheers for the info, I'll get googling Q-cars asap .

Are you sure it was a diesel... are you perhaps thinking of a standard looking silver Passat b5 that had a tuned Audi S4 Bi-Turbo engine in it. edit: Cheers for the info, I'll get googling Q-cars asap .
Surely the best sleepers are cars that were never known to be quick even to car enthusiasts eg a few i know of, a Beige Polo mk2 that has 200+ G40 lump in it, or a mk1 starlet with RX7 lump in it , there is a a huge number on minis with Bike engines, a Cinqichento (spelling?) with a Astra 2.0 16v engine in the back, a classic beetle with a Audi S3 lump in the back or a WRX engine or a Moris Minor with a 5L V8 in it.. there are loads.
Tip, find something slow and discreet and shoehorn the largest engine you can get your hands on lol.
Ahhhh this is where things get interesting, I would say that your average m5/rs4/6/t5 or whatever is not a proper sleeper/q car, any petrolhead will be able to identify these cars from a mile away, we all know what an m5/rs6/t5 is capable of, this then detracts somewhat from the whole shock and awe aspect of a truely mundane generic looking car going faster than believed possible that I really like. I would hardly call an AMG merc or whatever, with its big rims, AMG badges galore, massive drilled discs a subtle car.
The whole appeal of a sleeper/Q car to me, is that there are utterly no hints on the exterior of the car that tell of its real performance.
But that's just my opinion, feel free to dis-agree.

EDIT: that M5 is not even nearly a sleeper! It's an M5 to start with, which is obviously quick and then it's got tarty wheels and body mods!
Considering it's as quick as a GSX-R 1000, I'd say it's a sleeper. You'd never think some old "chavved up" M5 would be staying ahead of you on your 1000cc supersports Suzuki now, would you?doodles19 said:

Common punters don't know what they're looking at.

That's pretty much a perfect sleeper to me. Autocar did a brilliant faux-Sweeney article with that vs. the Volvo S80 T6 at some point, think it could have been 2004..?
