Someone did a very good ET on here last year.

I'm in the process of a resto on a burner, so no pics from me yet, I know people look down on them but it was my first. When that's done I'm going to get a new school sunday model c to build up to have some fun on.

here is the ET build

Nowt wrong with a Burner, especially if it was your first bike. I have a Styler i'm doing up at the mo.

No room for bike snobbery in this thread judge

I like the look of retro BMXs especially those with an '80s flavour. It'd be nice to have one to fart about on but other than that aren't they really impractical? Would you actually get much use out of a BMX?

I've got an early '86 Dyno Compe. It's currently kitted out with a load of mid school stuff, Peregrine triple chrome 48s, Peregrine Strut bars, plate mounted AD990 etc as it had a make over in about '94.

Recently I've been spending a bit of time on sites such as BMX Museum and have been inspired to revert it to period. First step will be re-powder coating the f&f in GT lavender then scouting ebay etc for bits. I really should stop finding ways of spending cash.

This is what mine looks like:

(not my photo)

I have not ridden it for years. Literally about 6 years. It was bought to replace a beautiful Specialized Fatboy A1 Pro which was stolen by a gang of youths. I saw someone riding it the week after in town, grabbed them and took them to a Policeman who just didn't want to know. The kid claimed his Dad bought it for him, which was probably true, but I had reported it stolen, it had my postcode on the bottom of the frame and I had numerous pictures of myself riding it (with all its customisations etc.) but no, the Police had no interest in actually doing any sort of work.

So long story short, the insurance company gave me a cheque for £600, and the 415 FSX was ordered from the US as I couldn't find a UK distributor. I was assured it was a "pro level" bike, more suited for riding vert ramps and parks as I was moving away from dirt. What I didn't realise was that this meant it was epically heavy. It's about the same weight as a Raleigh Chopper.

Sure, it had the super strong 48 hole rims, a proper gyro, 3 pc cranks, full size pegs on both sides, great brakes, proper park tyres etc. etc. but it was just so goddamn heavy. Every fall hurt more, I got tired quicker, and could only hop it about half as high as the alu FatBoy.

I used it to commute to Uni a few times, but then got a proper bike with gears which was more suited to the purpose, and have only been on it once since to show a bit of flatland to a mate. That was over 6 years ago. I guess I should sell it, but I keep thinking that one day I'll just drop in to a ramp and be instantly good again.

Just snagged one of my all time favourite bikes, a teal Mongoose Decade with all its original parts.cloud9

Just need something like a Torker, twin top tubes, looptail etc to complete my stable.

Im working on designing and making my own old school inspired ride. Have spoken to a few local engineering firms and so far so good.

The pic isn't mine but it's virtually identical to the one I bought and built in 1982/3.

I'm toying with the idea of buying a TA frame off Ebay and building up another to my ideal spec. Redline flight cranks have enjoyed a series of upgrades over the years, and both those and Skyway graphites seem so much more affordable these days. You can get the Uni Turbo seat, and a number of people offer CW handlebar copies but I don't think originals are still being made.

I still reckon an ultimate spec TA would see me short of nearly £1K. And I'm a fat b these days. Fat 40-somethings on BMWs isn't a great image.

I really wish I didn't sell my custom built DP freestyler. To make matters worse, I sold it for £25.

If you think that's bad, I sold a Mk1 Raleigh Chopper for £5 and have seen them on eBay for £400 - £1500. weeping

I meant the former but Freud noted the subconscious sometimes makes you say other "truths" too. Oops.boxedin

Meanwhile at my house.

Me "I quite fancy a BMX"
Mrs el stovey (unenthusiastically) "Do you?"
Me "yeah, you don't sound very supportive"
Mrs el stovey "Haven't you already got 3 bikes?"

Make it a restoration project, that way she'll never work out the true cost and it will keep you out of her way.

Tell her they cost peanuts on ebay, point her towards some low end crap and you'll be learning useful bike maintenance/build skills while doing it. So actually you'll save money on keeping your other three bikes in tip top shape, while practising on the BMX build.

Anyway that was/is my approach and seems to have worked so far.

edit

Alternatively, do a couple of 4ft drops and tricks on the tarmac and knacker your wheels on your mtb. Then point out the cost of a decent mtb wheel set is the same as a whole BMX.

Ask her how many pairs of shoes she's got then helpfully point out that she's only got one pair of feet! hehe
