2003 996TT Bose/Becker Stereo Upgrade

Hey All,

I'm just after some advice.

I've just bought a 2003 996TT which has a single din becker headunit & bose speakers/sub along with an amp under the bonnet.

I want to upgrade and add MP3 playback ideally from USB. I know my car uses the MOST bus and as such i need to replace both the headunit & amp....

I've read that i can keep the current speakers but may need to rewire the sub as it's impedance is too low for most amps ???

Can anyone recommend an amp i can get to replace the current bose one.. I dont mind spending a bit but dont want to go silly.

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Front door and dash speakers are 2 ohms, so need to be run in series.
rear side speakers are 4 ohms, so easy enough.
The sub is 1 ohm, so you need to take the unit out and re-run in series.
I basically ues the internal amp to power the side speakers, and then a small amp to run the subs.
You need to run wires to the amp plug in the luggage comp.
You will also need to run a switched live from the fusebox.
And you will need a FAKRA converter for the antenna plug.
If you really want an amp, some people have run an alpine 5 channel jobbie that fits in the CD changer slot in the luggage comp.

So if I buy a decent headunit.. Think i'll stick to a nice single din unit to save having to get a fascia kit that may not look quite right (also they only seem to make one that's for cars without cup holders which mine has).

I then need to connect the left front & front door speakers together (dash + to amp or headunit, dash - to door +, door - to amp or headunit) ???

Repeat for the other fronts. The rear's can be run straight from the headunit or amp.

Then i need to open the bose sub & do the same (sub 1 + to amp, sub 1 - to sub 2 +, sub 2 - to amp) ??

Can anyone recommend an amp thats not too expensive and can run that lot.

Or will a decent headunit drive all the speakers and i'll just get a mono amp for the sub ??

For the wiring, yeah basically you got it.

For the Amp. Not sure, I got a 5 channel amp because I wanted to have the option to add my sub back in later (I've taken it out for now to use the space for my sons travel cot).

The jumpering of + to - for the fronts can all be done at the amp connector in the boot rather than running new cables to each speaker.

Depending on the head unit, and quality of sound you want, you can use the head unit to drive the speakers and just run the cables to the Bose amp connector and jumper in at that point.

I might still have a wiring diagram for the connector which tells you what colour goes to which speaker. I'll try and dig it out and let you know if I can find it.

The diagram would be really helpfull. Last thing.. Anyone get any recomendations for a decent single din unit. I want mp3 playback (from a usb ideally).. I'd also like bluetooth so i can connect my iphone and take calls.. Any ideas ??

Becker cascade or grand prix will give you the functionality you require and they look oem as well

can i suggest a pioneer double din.
I fitted one in my 996 and it didnt look not-standard if you know what i mean, plus you could set the illumination to any colour you liked, so it matched the rest of the internal lighting - burnt orange

if you have cup holders the fit should be perfect, without any gaps watsoever.

have a look on 911 and PCGB forums for some other examples, but my advice, start with the head unit then start with the speakers

I'm defo thinking of getting a decent double din unit along with an amp to replace the bose one. I'll first try running the speakers direct from the head unit & if it sounds decent I'll get a small amp just for the sub. If it's duff then i'll get a 5 channel jobbie & amp the lot.

Has anyone got/recommend a decent fascia that i can use for a double din unit (with cupholders) & how hard is it to relocate my climate controls to the lower bit (do i need anything).

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I got my fascia from caraudiosecurity.com. Its a connects2 one.
The fitment was pretty good, but some trimming with a dremel made it better(a pic is in my profile)
Its very easy to relocate the A/C controls, but you will need a new surround, as its tapered
