A regret of mine..

Not having captured enough pictures of the things I have done, and the people I have loved.

Its not about living in the past, but it is about having a better grasp of how fantastic some of that stuff was !

Capture more moments so that you can keep them. I have done some mad stuff in the past and the memories are still fresh, but I wish I had a bit more.

So here's a tip!

Get a decent digital camera. Keep it with you and take lots of pictures. Computer memory is cheap so download them onto some secure storage device.

You won't regret it.

Or better still, get a phone that you can record video clips onto!

My mate has one of these, and showed me a clip yesterday that he took when in a club just the other night.

One of my other mates was talking when, out of nowhere, came a finger which poked him in the eye (deliberately). Hilarious to watch.

My wife has the annoying habit of throwing out 'rubbish' pictures. In years to come yes the picture may still be rubbish but the memories it brings back and the details in the background that you simply don't notice now will make it worth keeping.

Apparently historians are bemoaning the rise of digital cameras, as people generally delete shots that they don't want. Apparently its these "unwanted" shots that historians of the future would find most useful when investigating the times we live in now...

Digital cameras are worse for historians than just the "delete factor" in that whilst photos can easily last for 100+ years we are struggling to keep the bit-images from just 10 years ago due to the technology becoming obsolete.

Remember 8" floppies - there is hardly a drive left now that can read them.

Why do you think that your computer hard disk will be any easier?.....

CDR's are only good for 10 years too...

Cant see hope photo printing lasting long either - tho HDD and magneto-optical should last quite some time.

With the huge number of disk formats etc and copresion algorthyms archeologists in 1000's years time will have a hard time I bet, but super cool toys to deal with out antiques.

As to photo's, I take quite a few but cherish the memories more, and I wont compromise an experiance to take photo's, I swear I see some people who see the whole holiday/experiance through a camera lens.

Agreed, although there are plenty of places I've been & things I've done where I didn't want to 'spoil' the experience by snapping away. Looking back, I wish I'd taken more photos... there must be a happy medium!

You've got to copy them to a new storage volume anyway every few years, since current data carriers won't last for the eternity.
Inoformation technology in the hands of the end user is (historically) pretty much in the beginning, so I think it takes some time until it becomes understood how to handle data securely and durable.

I bought a digital camera last year, and I hesitated if I'd go for a big heavy high tech one, or for a small and light one with basic features.
I bought the lighter one, and I don't regret it at all. It's always with me in my bag, and ready when I need it. I got used to take random shots, and "waste" lots pictures.
I create a folder named year&month and put the pictures just in.
In the beginning, I just thought "store them, you've got enough disc space left". Today, I appreciate browsing through the archive. The collection enables me to retrospect into all stored months
I've even integrated the albums into my backup routine now.

How right you are, toppstuff.

The other sunday I was looking at my Dad's motoring-related pictures from the 60s. He must have taken something like a thousand pics per year in those days. It's simply amazing how "things were different" back then.
It will be interesting to see if the world changes as much is the next 50 years.

See you here, then !
I hope I won't have died or been forced into becoming a muslim in between

Dont take too many pictures though. I find my self just walking into the backyard about 3 times a week whenever i get bored and just snap pictures of everything.

Well I guess taking pictures is sort of my hobby then. I really could use a better one though.

why do you need a better hobby? A mate and I went out to the Lakes yesterday with the idea of taking pictures, the drive in the car was incidental in reality.

Of course we throughly enjoyed the drive, the chat and had a whale of a time walking around Aira Force and then around Keswick, Grasmere (I love that town) and the driving to and from said towns, but in reality I was more excited to come home and see the pictures.

If it hadn't been for the picture taking, I doubt I would have gone (petrol costs, still not quite warm enough at the mo), hence, picture taking is a hobby which takes you further afield... nought wrong with that.

A little off topic, I know but as there seems to be some computer guys on here... Could you tell me what (+/-) relates to concerning DVD writers. eg: 8 x Multi format DVD/CD Re-writer/ DVD-R, DVD+R,
DVD-RW, DVD+RW. Thanks....

Probably best floating this question as a new topic in the Computers forum.
But anyway, the +/- is basically different formats. Lots of format wars going on at the mo' in the DVD write/rewrite world (think Betamax vs VHS). Most newer drives should cope with both sorts, though.

I have about 20 photo albums - started taking photos of my life when I was about 10 and never really stopped, and I am so glad I have those photos. I also still have the 'rubbish' photos tucked away two, although the Missus is certain she's going to chuck them all out when I'm not looking.

Just to let you know that the DVD-R format is slighty better than the DVD+R format, can't remember how or why. Anyway, judging by past experience, the lower quality format will 'win' in the end
