Close on the heels of the trash 'Journey' autobiography of Tony Bliar comes 'Supermac' by D R Thorpe about Harold Macmillan, Tory Prime Minister in 1957, when I was knee-high to a grasshopper.

'You've never had it so good' he said, and was probably about right.

And his foresight was quite good too.

Towards the end of his life (died 1986) he drew up a list of do's and don’ts.

‘Rule number one in politics,’ he would declare with relish...

‘is Never Invade Afghanistan.’.

There used to be some well known sayings around foreign policy very hard earned by British armed force experience over the year.

1. Only fools get involved in the Balkans
2. Never invade Afghanistan

Ho hum.
