Video: Porsche 911 GTS

Porsche's wide-bodied special on the move for the first time

Porsche's new 911 GTS, launched before the public at the Paris motor show last week, has got to be as exciting a 911 as you can get without going down the turbo or GT3 route.

It's got the wide body from the Carrera 4S, but with two-wheel drive, and 402bhp from the 3.8-litre flat six. You also get natty little extras such as 19-inch centre-lock wheels, a sports exhaust and a plethora of design tweaks.

But actions speak louder than words, so here's 3m 26s of action. With some words.

Is it just my eyesight or do the widebody 997's not look much wider than the normal 997's, where as the widebody 996 was quite obviously wider than the normal 996?
The haunches over the rear wheels just doesn't look as pronounced on the 997 model. It may just be an optical illusion, but I would be interested in what others think.

Very cool, but only the hard-top version. Convertible 911s always remind me of a roll-top bath.

agreed, i genuinely can't tell the difference between this and a normal C4S other than the wheels are a different colour and it has a sticker on it saying carrera GTS.

looks good, but i fail to see the differences to mark it as a new model tbh.

That'll be because the C4S also has the wide body. You need to compare to a C2S. It is true though that the difference of the wide body is less obvious than it was on previous models which is a shame.

Ingredients:
1. Fat ar$e (optional)
2. Skinny ar$e
3. Any of 24 spoilers
4. Fuchs alloys
5. Random scaffolding inside
6. Horrid script graphics
7. 11hp CPU tweak
8. Rear seat delete (add £8k)
9. Unjustified random £25k price uplift

Mix any of the ingredients in any order, ensuring an extra large measure of price uplift and voila - 911 souffle for the gullible and fat profits for Porsche.

As to the argument that they will sell out and hold their value, consider: There are a group of people (dweebs let's call them) who collect Lladro porcelain figurines. Like 911 specials, they are limited edition 'good investments' as any dweeb will tell you whilst showing you around a home littered with porcelain turds. Question is, do you want to be a dweeb?

not biting biggrin

there's nothing in the spec (other than the badge on the back) that couldn't have been ordered from the factory before this was announced

X51 pack? yup

paint to sample? yup

interior to sample? yup

at least the sport classic, whilst ball crunchingly expensive, did have bespoke parts

this is a pure a run out model along with the speedster to fill build slots

the millennium (996) and celebration (964) models dropped in value as did the c2s (993) although they command a few £k more than the non run out models

Don't understand why all these 911 variants are needed - I read somewhere that Porsche had only sold a few hundred 911s (in the UK at least) in FY10

I don't think they offer the wide body for the 2wd drive Carrera's or the centre lock hubs and alloys.

I'm sure if you stumped up enough cash they would but it's not on the standard options lists.

Also the X51 pack is a £8.5K option on a C2S, this car is just £4.5K more than that model and gets a stack of other kit thrown in.

That said yes it's clearly a run out model but still what a way to go.

Will it hold it's price, no chance.

Is it a great spec 911, I'd say so.

Completely agree, this is far better looking than almost any of the current models and more importantly drives like a real sports car! Drive a quick air cooled 911 to experience that which has been lost in recent years...

Absolutely agree the 930 is a total classic and I doubt there will ever be another 911 that looks as good.

woof's red porker is a winner all day though.
