Audi S1 On Its Way - With Quattro
4x4 platform-share plan to deliver hot Audi and VW Polo R
PH first learned that
Audi has been tinkering with a Quattro option for the A1 back in June - and now we hear the programme to create a range-topping S1 has been given the go-ahead.
According to an Autocar article today, a 4x4 platform re-engineering job is considered cost-effective within the VW group as it will result in a trio of new models including the Audi S1, a new Volkswagen Polo R and something called a 'CrossPolo'. (Which may very well have just received its first and last mention here on PH.)
As a result, the 182bhp 1.4TFSI Audi won't be the A1 range flagship, and instead we'll get something altogether more interesting - hopefully with the grunt to match the looks of the stickered-up Urquattro tribute version we're currently forced to recycle pictures of...

Stick in a 2.0T 210ps and I think it will sell well. Remap to 260 and it will fly :-)

That splash of colour in the interior looks a bit aftermarket.

I suspect it's going to be more of a Mini JCW rival with 200 - 220bhp, rather than take on the BMW 1 M although that's what I'd like to see (5-pot RS3 anyone?)

Made-up news. Auto Express would be proud. Quiet news day at Autocar. In a classic Autocar twist in a couple of weeks there will be an article saying that Audi were continuing to look into it but have decided against it in the present climate due to 'other considerations'
There's not even room to stick a manual gearbox on the 1.4 Twincharger - where are they going to find room for all the extra gubbins a 4wd system (even Haldex) needs a place for?

Would suspect it'll have the TTRS engine. I'd like to see a S1 with 265bhp. I'd deffo buy one. Will be expensive, but if it ain't too heavy, and it handles well, it'll be a gem of a car.

Eh? Did you edit that?! Surely those who ordered a 1.4tfsi S Line knew it wasn't the S1 because it was called the 1.4tfsi S Line and not the S1.

And that it won't look like every other Audi does on the inside? And i use to own an Audi.

It could be epic if they power it up to about 270-300bhp. Any less and the 4x4 and weight of the general kit will sap it. Somewhere around 5.5s to 60 should do it.

Looks a bit "New Citroen" with the colour scheme. Probably put there to distract people from seeing it is just a slightly smaller A3

The current range-topper is the 1.4 S-Line A1 - it's £18,655.
That'll easily mean an OTR price of £20k+ (or more, knowing VAG's ridiculous pricing a the moment) for any reputed 'S' variant.
Excuse my curtness, but that's stupid money for such a small car.
Also, if this IS to happen, it NEEDS to have a bigger capacity engine - as mentioned in some other posts - such as the 2.0T in 265PS tune.
"Yeah, that's right mum, I've just paid nearly £25k for a 1.4 litre Polo/A1". Pfft.
