Love what you have done with your callipers (my nuts thread) - I am thinking of a little job for myself over easter.

Can anyone give me a few tips, dismantling, surface preparation and so on so I don't make a complete cup cake of myself?

Cheers All

Hi.

I didn't dismantle the calipers at all., but left them in situ. You can remove them easy enough (or at least remove them off the discs, but dont let them hang with the weight on the pipes). I think i'd do what i did...at least you know they're not going to drop on the floor. You could of course go the full hog and totally remove them, but its a lot of hastle.
I jacked the front of the car up so I could get to backs as much as posible; turning the steering to get to the rear.
Regarding cleaning them. Used a wire brush, and then thinners/degeaser to wipe the dust and sh!t off. Paint used was Hammerite Smooth as recommended by other pistonheaders. At £4.15 per tin, its cheaper than the real mcCoy. Did 2 coats. One coat looked awfull.
Hope this helps.

PS Dont get paint/degreaser etc..on the pads.

Agree with Kojak on all of this. I couldn't be bothered taking the calipers off either. I jacked one side of the car up at a time (mainly because of the lack of width of our drive), doing one side one day, the other side the next day. I used the "proper" caliper lacquer - the stuff you can pick up from Halfords (but I ordered it online from Demon Tweeks). I ended up doing three separate coats to make sure that the paint was as bright as possible. The first one looked terrible, and I was getting concerned about having fscked my car up! Looked great after three, though, and in 6 months hasn't cracked/peeled/anything. Definitely recommend it.

The kit that I bought had some cool cleaning spray with it. No better than the usual stuff you can buy, of course. But it made it easy! If you're mixing up coloured lacquer with hardener, make sure it's a thick consistency, or it'll just run down to the bottom of the calipers! You might be OK with the Ronseal/whatever, though. I have plenty of pics of doing the process on mine. Will upload a couple if I get a chance.

Does the Hammerite stand up to the temperature? I would have thought you'd needed high temperature paint? Hammerite do "barbecue paint" but it's only in black.

The caliper paint kits are expensive, but engine paint should do the trick.

It does stand up to high temperature, but how high i dont know. I went on the advise on others on here, who said theres had been on for a couple of years before it needed a recoat. Mines been done 3 months, and not a mark. How it stands up to track days, I dont know.

About £20-25 including a cleaning solvent, lacquer, and hardener. There was plenty for doing all 4 calipers. It's the Folia-tec stuff. Like I say, I've seen it in Halfords since then, along with all their other "RipSpeed" performance stuff.

Just don't forget to mix it up nice and thick! Probably a bit thicker than they recommend in the instructions. And only mix half a tub at once (enough for two wheels) as that'll take you hours to get a good couple of coats on, anyway.
