Hello all.

I have a friend (Bob) who has just purchased a netgear wireless broadband DGN1000 router for use with AOL.
He was told that this is the only one which will work with AOL (purchased in PC world).

Can anyone tell me if there is any special setup procedure for AOL? I have a netgear router with BT and it's just a simple case of entering the user name, no password.
I've entered Bob's user name and password into the router, but authentication has failed. He seems to think his user name is his email address, bobsurname99@aol.com

Can anyone on AOL tell me if the username is in the correct format or if this information should be available somewhere? AOL's helpline was taking too long to get through last night.

without looking I'd say he doesn't need the "@aol.com" bit on the end of his username

I'm sure it should be just "bobsurname99".....I'll have a look at the settings at "my friend bobs" home later if needed

My "friend bob" has been on AOL with a Netgear router for years now with no problems smile

The login name has to include the @aol.com and as far as hardware, any brand of router will suffice, it's not specific (bearing in mind the difference between adsl and broadband).

ADSL uses a phone line, broadband uses cable.

Sorry, meant to say broadband (which he already mentioned in the title...DOH!)

Just ignore me. rotate

The login used to be one of your aol screen names and the password for that account.

They changed that a while ago and now it seems to be yourphonenumber@dialbb.com and then a random password that they give you. So you'll probably have to call them for it.

Good luck with that. This morning my router wouldnt log on. I spent 45 minutes talking to the AOL halfwits in India before giving up and digging out a 3g dongle. Apparently they are doing work on the servers today whatever that means.

That's not my understanding. Or Wikipedia's. Or Netgear's.

So what is your understanding?

Like I said....ADSL utilises the phone line, broadband uses cable/fibre optics.

Broadband is marketing speak for internet service that doesn't use an analogue modem that incurs call costs, and is as slow or fast as the provider can get away with to the idiot consumer.

DSL/3G/ Cable/ Fibre are simply delivery mechanisms.

The small point I was making was the basics of buying a router. One type has a phone connection (ADSL), the other (normally labelled broadband) has a Ethernet connection.
Sorry if I wasn't being specific enough. rolleyes

Not a question of specific, more of accurate. biggrin

Point taken though. OP, make sure you didn't buy a Virgin router by accident wink

There's more than two types though and the one you contrasted with broadband is broadband as are others (3G for one) and the products for it do get labelled broadband.

Roll your eyes all you want but you're the one who thought the distinction was important enough to bring up, you might as well get it right.

I've just done this and the hit the username password problem to get the router to login, I had the orginal correct detals which were as you have above ie bobsurname99@aol.com and your password. But the tts at AOL have changed router login details remotley without informing the users. After 2 * 20min phone calls to get the correct login details, they eventually told me what to use which is @dialBB.com and password aol123 the router logged in straight away the dirty rotten scoundrels BAH!

So in your case bobsurname@dialBB.com password aol123
(NB can't remember if the BB in dialBB was in caps, or just dialbb)

I was making a BASIC comparison, not going into specifics of how many different types of routers are out there. If I hadn't of mentioned it, you would probably have come back with another smart ass comment about "any brand of router"?? what...ADSL? SDSL? 3G? LLU?
I will word my replies more carefully next time.

FFS, are you usually this pedantic? banghead

Anyway OP, hope you get it sorted for your mate "Bob". wink

Yup, check which forum you're in biggrin Worse than SP&L, this place.

Edit as that might have come across a little harsh. Thing is, its quite important to be accurate with computers and things, as they dont have a capacity to be understanding of errors

Oops! phoneredface
Thanks everyone for your help. I'll try the above login format later.
Much appreciated! drink
