A TVR V8S (somebody had to say it)

Don't think it is a straight forward swap with any "run of the mill" car

AFAIK all the racks on TVR S-series are modified Chevette items.

Yep that's my understanding as well. Chevette rack, Ford arms and track rod ends, not sure about the pinion splines.

Ray,

See FAQ

The V8S I believe just has longer track rods than the S3 and earlier due to the wider track

The rack is chevette, the inner balljoints are in what looks a bespoke machined housing - and the track rods as said are ford but I don't know what.
There's been mention that the inner balljoint has some sort of connection to Lotus but I don't know what either.
I've had a few emails / conversations with one or two specialists on here but they were not willing to reveal the exact secrets of the rack.

I have had the gaiters off my V8S rack and a chevette rack that I bought off ebay - the the geometry differences are considerable - there's no way you can use a chevette rack off the shelf, the track rods are wrong thread and about 2 inches too short.

The chevette rack I had was a recon, its in Ken's garage somewhere if anyone needs it.

I've got some pics somewhere I'll try and dig them out.

I sold the rack to Ken - so if someone wants it all proceeds to his family.

Here's a couple of Chevette / V8S rack pics - I haven't posted these before.

Chevette at back, V8S at front.
Interestingly without any science applied I'd say the V8S inner ball joint looks spaced out about 20mm over the chevette rack - so that may mean that the standard chevette geometry is correct for the V6 as the track is 20mm less than the V8 (though track rod is too short and wrong thread for track rod end)

Here is the chevette rack laid on the ground under the car with the bracket positions lined up - you can see how much too short the track rod is.

and here's V8S rack at top, chimeara PAS rack at bottom.
The chimaera rack inner balljoints are about 12mm further inboard than the V8S - there is occasionally a little kickback through the steering but its minor and no reason to take it off again.

I've got loads of steering pics that I can bore you with if you need any more detail. rolleyes
